I. Introduction Social media platforms are changing the way organizations are communicating to the public Conversations are happening all the time and everywhere. There is need for the Communications Group to be timely and proactively aware of the reactions and opinions expressed by the general public as it relates to the Federal Reserve and its actions on a variety of subjects.

II. Social Listening Platforms Social media listening platforms are solutions that gather data from various social media outlets and news sources. They monitor billions of conversations and generate text analytics based on predefined criteria. They can also determine the sentiment of a speaker or writer with respect to some topic or document. The information gathered can guide the organizations public relations group in assessing the effectiveness of communication strategies.

Here are some of the services it can offer: o Track reach and spread of your messages and press releases o Handle crisis situations o Continuously monitor conversations o Identify and reach out to key bloggers and influencers o Spot emerging trends, discussions themes and topics

A. Geographic scope of social media sites The solution must support content coming from different countries and geographical regions. It should also support multiple languages.

B. Content and Data Types The solution must be able to gather data from the primary social media platforms –Facebook, Twitter, Blogs, Forums and YouTube. It should also be able to aggregate data from various media outlets such as: CNN, WSJ, Factiva etc.

C. Reports and Metrics The solution must provide real-time monitoring of relevant conversations. It should provide sentiment analysis (positive, negative or neutral) around key conversational topics. It must be able to provide summaries or high level overviews of a specific set of topics. It should have a configurable dashboard that can easily be accessed by internal analysts or management. The dashboard must support customization by user or group access. The solution should provide an alerting mechanism that automatically sends out reports or notifications based a predefined trigger.

D. FRBNY Technology Integration The solution must be able to integrate with existing FRBNY technologies such as: Google Search appliance, Lotus notes suite and web trends. It must have support for single sign on or windows integrated authentication.

E. Cost Structure The solution should offer a flexible pricing structure that can support multiple user licensing. It should also have the option to base pricing on content volume and usage. Supplier acknowledges an understanding of and agrees to comply with the above minimum solutions requirements.

See my post #13 for a significant new thought about this topic.

There is another alternative, just don’t use stupid data mining sites like Facebook.

...and then off to the pub where we form the new party.

Name the pub and I'm there. It's the patriotic thing to do, and hell, it's beer that keeps me sane.

The problem is that the companies that have the information are in the tank for the democrats.

Google paid a 3% tax rate last year, but gets away with it because they helped Obama get in office. All the while, Obama runs around screaming how we all have to “pay our fair share”.

Facebook was also 100% in the tank for Obama. Do you think they would give the same information to the GOP? None of the media companies would.

Romney 4x what Obama did for his television ads.

I think their social machine is just getting started ... 2014 will be the test. If the Repubs get slayed I would start working on that bugout plan, because it is over for good...

It was really fun to interview soon-to-be college grads back in the mid 2000s. Back when you had to have an .edu address to participate in FB.

Unless you had a corporate back door hack, LOL.

Thanks for posting this, Laz.

Like #18, I feel “frankly, I’d be more astonished if they weren’t.” But your point about unfair use in elections is good.

From the post: “an alerting mechanism that automatically sends out reports or notifications based a predefined trigger.”

. . . It has a full automatic, or semi-automatic, trigger? Sounds like Diane Fein-one-to-talk should block it. . .

I tried you link and this is what I got:

The webpage cannot be found
HTTP 404
Most likely causes:
•There might be a typing error in the address.
•If you clicked on a link, it may be out of date.
What you can try:
Retype the address.
Go back to the previous page.
Go to and look for the information you want.
More information

TOR was invented by the US Navy!

“As of 2012, 80% of the Tor Project’s $2M annual budget comes from the United States government.”

None of this worries me (to the point that I fear they will try to "come and get me"), except for the privacy issue.

I do not wish for harm or violence to anyone, even to those I seriously despise (liberals). I believe the Founding Fathers left to us devices with which to handle the problems we face in a non-violent manner.

Sadly, I do not think liberals wish for such a solution (beyond conservatives just bending over and taking it) and become more militant and intransigent the more we stand up to them on the issues (goaded on by Zero as they are). Push will come to shove.

I am not claiming that the democrats have done something illegal, they just are far better at using already available tools, and maybe building their own, to mine data, target voters, and influence opinion.

For instance, go to Google Trends and look for the search terms "gun control."

Gun control

This chart show the relative search frequency of the term on Google over time. A President is a news maker, and what he says in a speech, or his actions, does alter our behavior on the internet, and can be seen and monitored. The spike in this chart is entirely due to Obama's recent actions. If you play around with the tool, you can get better information. Like if you search for similar terms like "gun control fascism" or "gun control school safety," you can get a better picture of how people are thinking about the issue, what side they are on, and how they are responding to the president's words and actions.

There are many tools and tricks where a smart organization can mine the Internet and determine which sites are likely to support you, which are not, and how specifically to respond and target friends and foes alike to enhance or suppress their participation.

Look at his constant use of the term "common sense." That is a code word to program people. It is a tested and targeted phrase. We need to detect and counter the programming with deprogramming of our own.

Remember, the media are captive prostitutes for the democrats. The media's tricks to influence opinion are shared with the democrats. Democrats are much better at this than republicans, and conservatives must get better at this.

There are a number of older posters from the Clinton days than could/can/will attest that the Secret Service does.

Then the reporters turned to Hatch, who proudly described the center as “a great tribute to Utah,” then added, “I can’t tell you a lot about what they’re going to be doing, because it’s highly classified.”

NSA will be hiring Mormons who have learned foreign languages overseas to translate the text and voice recordings that they collect overseas. Likewise the CIA cannot "legally" collect data on Americans. One catch is that other "friendly" governments can collect on Americans and trade the info. The other problem is that the FBI and soon, the DHS will have a lot of info collection on Americans and their postings. The good news is that all of the above are mostly incompetent.
