UK TAXPAYERS are set to cough up £6MILLION this year to pay the bills of hate cleric Abu Qatada.
The Islamic fanatic racked up legal costs of £5,000 A DAY last month after being allowed to stay in Britain.
It will cost an astonishing £5MILLION this year to foot the security bill for the 52-year-old who has been closely monitored since his release from jail last November.
The £100,000-a-week operation includes a team of SIXTY officers from Scotland Yard, MI5 and a private security firm. Keeping him in jail for years cost the taxpayer £850,000 while the security bill since his release has topped £1million.
Figures from the Legal Services Commission reveal it has spent a total of £581,537 on legal aid for Qatada. Over a period of just 13 days last month the figure rocketed by £66,000 from £515,000 — £5,000 a day.
Experts expect that as the battle over Qatada’s deportation to Jordan hots up, his legal aid costs could exceed £400,000 over the next year.
And the Government’s legal bill could hit £600,000 as it brings in top lawyers to try to get him booted out.
Once described by a judge as “Osama Bin Laden’s right-hand man in Europe,” Qatada is fighting deportation to his homeland on terror charges. Home Secretary Theresa May had hoped to put him on a plane home — but she lost a legal battle last November after he appealed, claiming prosecutors would use evidence gained through torture.

HATE preacher Abu Qatada must be the only man in Britain who isn’t feeling the pinch.
While our schools, police, and brave Armed Forces face swingeing cuts, spending on the terror suspect just seems to go up and up.
It’s bad enough that he is using human rights laws to stay in a country he despises.
But hard-working families struggling to make ends meet will be sickened to learn that last month this unwanted guest was costing them £5,058 A DAY for legal aid alone.
And the total bill for his legal aid, security, housing and benefits in 2013 is expected to top a staggering £6million.
That’s enough to pay for an extra 283 nurses, 347 rookie soldiers or 263 teachers.
Qatada, a Bin Laden stooge and inspiration for the 9/11 hijackers, is using every trick in the legal handbook to dodge deportation back to his homeland of Jordan.
To make matters worse, soft-touch European judges seem determined to let him.
Home Secretary Theresa May must be tearing her hair out in despair at how to get rid of him.
Even that is costing us, as government lawyers run up a mammoth bill in their hopeless quest to find common sense in the barmy human rights laws that allow him to stay.
He’s been playing Qat and mouse with the authorities for 12 years.
Let’s hope 2013 is the year we finally get rid of him.
Then we can end this costly madness once and for all.
They UK could save a lot of money by just dropping him off at a New York City firehouse. He would be taken care of there.
