An exterminator named Jason Smith was arrested and charged today in the strangling and burning death of Philadelphia pediatrician Melissa Ketunuti.

Smith, 36, had been sent to Ketunuti's home on a service call where the two got into "some kind of argument" in Ketunuti's basement on Monday, Capt. James Clark of the Philadelphia police department said this morning.

"At her home they got into an argument. It went terribly wrong. He struck her, and knocked her to the ground," Clark said. "Immediately he jumped on top of her, started strangling her. She passed out, and then he set her body on fire."

Clark said Smith burned the woman's body "to hide evidence like DNA." He said "at some point, he bound her up." The doctor was found with her hands and feet tied behind her back.

The captain said that before today's arrest Smith's record consisted of only "minor traffic offenses."

Have you ever seen the movie “Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer”? One of the ways Henry would get into people’s houses is by posing as an exterminator, at one point in his life he was an exterminator. BTW, the movie creeped me out so bad I could only watch it once.

There's a really odd part to this. He was "sent"? Presumably by the exterminating company he worked for? Given the publicity of the case, nobody at the exterminating company recognized her (uncommon) name as a customer from the prior day?

Police had to discover his presence from neighborhood surveillance videos? If he was "sent" there to deal with some problem, presumably there would have been phone company records between her and the exterminating company? One would think that grabbing phone records would have been the FIRST thing competent police would do, if only to narrow down the time of death and question the last people who talked to her.

Very strange. We are not getting the whole story.

Horror! Inviting someone into our home is trusting indeed. The employer has responsibility to determine an employees background. There is not much else they can do.

My plumbing company sends two people to the jobs they have done for me. Even the heater checks each season. Sending two is a good idea. One is the helper, I suppose learning the trade. Still it serves to be a good and healthy idea.

Thanks, BBell. Heard on the news that this cretinous murderer went on to another job assignment later that day. Goes to show, you never know!

Ping to Philly.
