Penney’s pinching vendors on pricing (Desperation at JCP)
NY Post ^ | 1/24/13 | JAMES COVERT

Fake prices are coming back at JCPenney, and this time they’ll be more fake than ever.

In a fresh bid to highlight Penney’s prices as low, CEO Ron Johnson is pushing some manufacturers to concoct phony suggested retail markups for their clothing, sources told The Post.

The plan, insiders say, includes erecting signs and fixtures that will display the sometimes made-up retail prices, while tagging the clothes and accessories themselves with Penney’s own lower prices.

“They want to have a table of sweaters with a sign saying ‘regular price, $30,’ and the price tag will be $22,’” one source told The Post in a hypothetical example.

It doesn’t matter, JCP made it clear which side of the culture war they are on. May they go bankrupt soon.

...used to be one of my favorite places to shop for my clothes.

I was not pleased when I visited one of the local mall stores during the holidays. The selection was poor, displays were excessively compulsive, and products were not priced to sell. Little hot male fannies were on live display everywhere. Needless to say I was not comfortable and left the store without purchasing...went to Sears.

I used to work at one right out of college part-time, when they were still a decent establishment where you could bring your kids. Not anymore.

I am sure the massive quantities of LGBT consumers, responding to JCP’s “inclusive” ads, will more than make up for us bitter clinger fundy teabaggers who have found better places to spend our money. Right, JCP marketing department?

The problem is that when a retailer offers a product for a reasonable or fair price, people don't think they are getting “a deal”.

Everyone wants a “deal”.
I sell a product for $700, and put it on sale for $600 occasionally, and people still ask for a discount.
Someone else sells the product for $1100, and puts it on sale for $800.
They offer a discount of 15% off "their regular price" to almost anyone. People pay almost $300 more than they need to, and they actually think they “got a deal”.

That human tendency explains this tactic.
