White House adviser David Plouffe said Sunday that he believes President Barack Obama has sufficient votes in Congress to pass gun-control legislation. …

Appearing on CNN’s “State of the Union,” which was televised from the National Mall in Washington D.C., Plouffe said he believes the White House has 60 votes in the Senate and 218 in the House from Democrats and Republicans.

He also predicted that immigration reform will make it through Congress. …

The real question concerning votes is this. Will congressmen who dare to help pass constitutionally indefensible gun control bills get enough votes to be reelected in 2014?

In case any of y'all haven't seen the following excerpt which was brought to our attention in a related thread, the Supreme Court clarified the purpose of the 2nd Amendment in United States v. Cruikshank.

"The second and tenth counts are equally defective. The right there specified is that of "bearing arms for a lawful purpose." This is not a right granted by the Constitution. Neither is it in any manner dependent upon that instrument for its existence. The second amendment declares that it shall not be infringed, but this, as has been seen, means no more than that it shall not be infringed by Congress. This is one of the amendments that has no other effect than to restrict the powers of the national government, leaving the people to look for their protection against any violation by their fellow citizens of the rights it recognizes (emphasis added), to what is called, in The City of New York v. Miln, 11 Pet. 139, the "powers which relate to merely municipal legislation, or what was, perhaps, more properly called internal police," "not surrendered or restrained" by the Constitution of the United States." --United States v. Cruikshank, 1875.

we had enough purists who gave us obama two.

Get over it. Your GOP liberal candidate lost because he was a liberal. Blaming conservatives is just stupid.

Maybe you should think harder about that church then.

I urge you all not to take this lightly.
The full-court-press is on and the left thinks that now is the time to move against our second amendment rights.

Even if you think that they will never get enough votes, even if you think that writing to your representatives locally and in DC is futile and pointless, we need to push back on as many fronts and in as many layers of effort as we can.

One of those layers is to make ourselves heard before legislation is voted upon.

Don't just "urge" or "implore" them not to vote for new gun control laws. Let them know that they took an oath of office to protect and defend the U.S. Constitution and that any new gun legislation they vote for will be viewed as an infringement upon our rights as recognized by the second amendment.

MOST IMPORTANTLY: Don't just give them your opinion, ask them their stance.

"How will you vote?"

Get them to put it in writing. Either they support the Constitution or they don't. Make sure that they answer that question in their reply.

"How will you vote?"

If they reply with a form letter with flowery language designed not to take a stance, reply back and ask them again.

"How will you vote?"

In as much time as we all spend each day on FR vowing to stand for our rights, we can stand for our rights now and write an email to our local and federal legislators.

Push back.

Did he actually state what the gun control law the President has the votes for will contain?

There’s no way that it’ll contain universal registration and an assault weapons or high-capacity magazine ban. For every RINO he can peel off on those issues he’s going to lose at least one Dem from a purple/red-leaning district.

He might be able to get through a comprehensive package that includes money for research, money for mental illness treatment, more restrictions on the sale of games/etc with hyper-violent content and a universal background check for all gun sales.

My guess is that there’ll be a “compromise” package that allows the President to declare victory and walk away from the issue.

I’m normally not a single-issue voter, but if gun control passes I WILL be one in 2014 and beyond. Both primaries and general. My Congressman is a Progressive Dem (safe seat) but my Senators are both Republicans. There are three issues to me. In reverse order: the GOP actively enabling a situation that helps build Obama’s political capital by giving him the perception of a victory on this issue; the treating of law-abiding US Citizens like they’re criminals due to the behavior of real criminals and the mentally insane; the shredding of the 2nd Amendment.

That last one is HUGE to me, because since the Dems are willing to shread the 2nd Amendment they’re sure as hell willing to shred the others (and the Constitution as well). They’ve been doing it for years. It’s time for the GOP to stand up and say “NO MORE”, draw a line in the sand and make the Dems pay for every additional inch of ground they want to take.

Depending on what (if anything) they pass, it could be a lot more than that.

Plouffe, it doesn’t matter if you have 100 Senators and 435 Representatives vote for your gun control bills, they’ll still be unconstitutional and we won’t obey them. If you really insist on having a popular insurrection against your government, go ahead and try this. Oh, and don’t expect the military to pull your feet out of the fire—they’ll be on our side.

He's bluffing.

However, this is how astroturfing of Congress begins. Let's hope the GOP whip sees through it instead of enabling it.

there were more than enough conservatives in the primaries that would have prevented the buffoonery of the senate races.

Good advice, but they are bluffing at the federal level, at least for now. The danger is at the Blue State level for now.

They will try to do this like Prince Andrew did in NY. We won’t find out about it until it’s too late.

Ny is going to lose the coming court challenges and everyone in NY has said the compliance will be near zero.

We left a liberal church. Took a while to find one that wasn’t in the tank for communists.

You won't get conservatives to vote for your liberal candidates. Get used to losing.

Get the GOP to quit cheating for their handpicked candidate, and tell Rove to quit badmouthing and attacking conservatives, and you might get a conservative nominated, and have a chance of winning.

Notice how the “new” article twisted Plouffe’s statement that Plouffe “believes” that the President has enough votes into an outright bravado claim that the President has the votes as a matter of fact. So, a hesitant claim becomes an irrefutable fact. This is utterly dishonest reporting. And, of course Plouffe is lying. NRA also claims to have the votes to stop it.

There’s only one solution to this whole mess; remove the middle class and REALLY bankrupt them. Get China nervous and have them call in their notes...: )
