Oak Lake waters recede, revealing guns
Lincoln Journal Star ^ | Jan 14, 2013 | Nicholas Bergin

As the worst drought since 1956 gripped the nation last year, lakes and ponds slowly receded, revealing decades worth of dropped and discarded fishing tackle, pop cans and all sorts of flotsam.

At Oak Lake in Lincoln, the debris included at least two guns.

A person walking along the edge of the lake last summer spied a suspicious item and called Lincoln police, who found a handgun rusted beyond recognition.

“That thing could have been in there for 50 years for all we know,” said Sgt. Ben Miller.

After that gun turned up, officers Kevin Hinton and Jen Mullendore couldn’t help but wonder what other secrets the mud may hold, Miller said.

They came up with a plan, and on Nov. 14, four members of Lincoln Police's Northwest Team spent 10 hours walking the exposed lake bed with metal detectors.

“We dug several hundred holes that day," Miller said. "Anything that was giving us a significant tone, we dug up."

Ninety percent of what they found was fish hooks and pop cans, he said.

40 hours of union government pay (probably OT) picking up tin cans & fish hooks.

Was any of this on private property?

“Significant tone” from a fish hook? These guys have no clue how to use a metal detector!

Since it is the Lincoln Journal Star, in Lincoln, Nebraska and the article says Oak Lake in Lincoln, I have a guess.

Gee. I thought that when they found the fishing tackle. Maybe there are some hammers and tools down there as well. These guys treat rusted guns like they were dropped from a UFO or something. They are just one of many tools that break, wear out, or are accidentally dropped into the lake.

Sheesh.

Oh wow, I'm so scared . . . not!

It's not "rusted beyond all recognition" - pretty sure it's an ancient Crosman BB gun, probably a 150 or 106, with the barrel rusted off, just the air chamber still in place:

That's why they never mention the caliber or make -- it's a big nothing.

What a non-story.

I wonder if the number of unsolved homicides = number of weapons found :)

Not a clue where this actually is located.

Less than half of states have a town named Lincoln. 24 total. That should make it easier to figure out the location.

;o)

My reaction to this story – wow! That really does happen ping!

Of course there was an episode of Alaskan State troopers where they went out to a call of some hunters in distress in a boat – where the lost all their guns in the process….

Let’s see... “Oak Lake?” In “Lincoln!” That explains it. It’s in California! Or is that Nebraska...or...?

Anyway, those boring folks were telling the truth after all, eh?

Just think how many murders didn’t happen because that gun was at the bottom of the lake.

Hah! That's easy! Go to Colorado and look left! Or go to Iowa and look right!

Either one will get you to see Nebraska.

With all due respect, wouldn't those directions get you to either Utah or Illinois?
