Men armed with assault rifles walk through Portland to 'educate' public on gun rights
kbnd.com ^ | January 10, 2013

Two men seen walking down a Portland street armed with assault rifles told police they were exercising their Second Amendment rights and hoping to educate the public on gun rights.

Several calls were made to 911 on Wednesday afternoon, with alarmed residents reporting two men with guns strapped to their backs walking through the area of Southeast Seventh Avenue and Spokane Street in Portland's Sellwood neighborhood.

When police arrived on the scene, they found two 22-year-old men carrying rifles openly on their backs. The two were also holding valid concealed handgun licenses in Oregon, according to Fox affiliate KPTV.

The men reportedly told officers that they were seeking to educate onlookers about their Second Amendment rights.

"Exercising my rights with a rifle to try to decrease the demonizing of peacefully exercising your rights in public," one of the men, who declined to release his full name, told the station.

Portland authorities later identified the men as Warren Drouin and Steven Boyce. Officers said carrying firearms openly is legal in Oregon and carrying a concealed gun is legal with a valid license, according to the station. But doing one or both may generate 911 calls and possibly tie up resources that are needed for a real emergency.

One of the men told the station that he hoped people would approach him and talk to him, instead of calling police.

"What they really should do is observe the person to determine if the person is aggressive," he said of seeing someone with a gun in public. "We're not doing anything threatening to anyone."

The Portland Police Bureau, however, asks anyone who sees someone armed with guns to immediately call 911.

What's the point? They never show up until after it is too late. When's the last time you heard of 911 being called for an intruder or suspicious person outside and the cops actually catching them?

“The Portland Police Bureau, however, asks anyone who sees someone armed with guns to immediately call 911.”

So call someone with a gun if you see someone with a gun?

I don’t think the timing is right to do something like this. The average non-gun owner doesn’t understand this.

This is an interesting tactic. Sadly, Florida does not allow open carry or I would take part by carrying an M4 on my shoulder while grocery shopping.

Pro-gun Americans need to start discussing this as a valid tactic. I see absolutely NOTHING wrong with normalization of open display of firearms in public again. It was commonplace just 100 years ago, and in countries like Israel, it’s almost required.

I would happily carry an AK or an M4 on my shoulder in public and a concealed handgun on my person if the law in Florida allowed it. (The military people I know have always said that your handgun should only be used to get safely to your rifle.) After a while, the police would stop assigning resources to callers reporting “a man with a gun” since those who are openly displaying the firearm in a public square while taking part in a perfectly legal activity (i.e. grocery shopping) are definitely NOT interested in committing a crime. They’ve already got the eyes of the public on them.

Perhaps those that did call the police, didn’t want to take the risk that they would do something aggressive, or to them, walking around like that was aggressive behavior..

And then they talk about tying up resources when people do what they were requested to do by the authorities.

The guns were obviously not illegal, or there would have been arrests. The article first calls them assault rifles, then later only rifles.

Ed Schultz yesterday claimed that automatic vs. semi-automatic is defined by the gun maker, and that features like the stock, grips, clips are what define it as automatic.

There are a surprising number of Freepers who get all watery in the knees over open carry.

Here’s a thread about the case where the kid was arrested for walking down the street with a rifle (He eventually won the case) but you’ll see plenty of weak kneed Freepers commenting.

Call 911 if you see someone armed with guns?

What if they are going into a crowded mall armed with chain saws and rattlesnakes?

“Oh, 911? yeah, never mind!, He ain't got no guns though his snakes are eating a few tykes and he's carving a few poor guys into pork chops—but he ain't got no guns so go after them duck hunters who may get drunk and shoot off a cypress limb.

Stupid move, given the current hysteria.

I WHOLEHEARTEDLY disagree! "Given the current hysteria," I believe MORE people should carry openly. We need to send a message to those who wish to do us harm: "We will NOT die willingly. You better be 'well-regulated' or you will be the first to die."

This strategy should be adopted in any state that allows open carry. Rifles slung on shoulders, pistols in holsters, shotguns and bandoleers, have them at the ready and go about your business. If every gun owner in the country carry openly during the commission of all of their business, violent crime in the public arena would PLUMMET! No criminal would be stupid enough to attempt seizure of that weapon at the risk of being killed themselves. It's all a canard.

Remember, when it comes to violent crime, there are 6 stages:
1) Intent
2) Interview
3) Positioning
4) Attack
5) Reaction

As a responsible gun owner, you should be intimately attuned to your environment and surroundings, and as such, you should be aware of anyone angling to do you harm, take your weapon, or commit a crime.

A few decades ago, no one would have been concerned about seeing men going about their business in public with a rifle slung across their shoulder, but the police would have been called if someone was acting insane in public.

Today, the insane wander the streets and no one is concerned, but carry a rifle in public and the police get called along with much handwringing.

We changed how we reacted to these two situations, and we’ve reaped the consequences. Perhaps we should change back.

All intents aside of course...

The way the self-defense laws in my state work, the shooter would be charged with murder - assuming these two guys were in fact just walking down the street with shouldered rifles.

We have open carry in my state. Pretty rare you see someone carrying open. Every now and then you hear of someone being arrested for disturbing the peace for carrying open. Our local cops have carry permit data as well. I got stopped recently for having window tint too dark and the office said: "I see you have a permit to carry. Are you armed." I put my hands on the wheel so he could see them and said: "Does a fat baby fart?" He laughed and let me go on my way. I've since wondered where that might have ended up if it was the wrong cop.

You know, I used to be against this sort of behavior... to me, these guys are just rabble-rousers asking for trouble with no real purpose.

However, because of this latest media outcry and propaganda mission, I am starting to think these guys are right. The fact that there were a flurry if 911 calls about this proves their point: the public has been indoctrinated and are generally stupid when it comes to firearms and our rights.

Granted, there are few reasons to carry a full length rifle down the street in the city, but I am to the point where I think everyone who carrys a handgun should start carrying openly where allowed... for the sole purpose of demystifying the whole thing and forcing ACCURATE education onto the public. They have been sold faulty information for decades and they won't seek out the truth on their own. Only when it is in front of them are they forced to deal with it and then, finally, recognize it for what it is.

A couple of questions occur to mind upon reading this story:

1. If these two young men had been exercising their rights in this way at Sandy Hook, would the monster have done what he did?

2. Even if he proceeded to do what he planned to do, which seems somewhat unlikely in the the presence of armed citizens, could he have possibly killed twenty-six people?

Crip, you’ve obviously been on the Earth longer than me; can you remember a time when people were involved in daily shootouts at gas stations and grocery stores because they were openly carrying a rifle, shotgun, or pistol?

Americans have been socially re-engineered to be averse to firearms as if they’re tools of great destruction. No one thinks twice about the clip hanging out of my pocket holding my knife in place. No one thinks twice about the lanyard for my defense flashlight. But if they see the hammer of a pistol or the stock of a rifle, you’re all of a sudden going to fly off the handle in public and go on a rampage massacre? C’mon!

There should be a loud call to action to all gun owners: if your state allows it, open carry your pistol and/or rifle when you go to the grocery store or the mall.

The nice thing about this strategy is that it unwinds decades of liberal social programming and throws the law right back in their face.

The Liberals are doing everything to make homosexuality, gay marriage, and abortion “normal.” They want everyone to accept it as a “right.” Well, we already have a right enshrined in our Constitution. It requires no additional laws or legislative wrangling. It’s call the Second Amendment, and it allows us to bear arms. A right not utilized is a right wasted!

You probably won’t have your gun rights for long.

I don’t think they’re idiots, because they seemed to know what they were doing to carry in a manner that did not get them in trouble.

I hope they were handing out copies of the US Constitution.

That it causes hysteria to see a man with a rifle strapped to his back is a sign we may be too far gone already. You may say, “not now”. I say, “now, most definately”. The NRA should be in schools now, making sure that we are not a nation of hysterical bed-wetters who panic at the sight of a gun.

This Sandy Hook garbage is going to be beaten like a drum until your 2nd Amendment rights are gone.

Class III ATF regulated full automatic firearms are legal in Oregon with the proper tax stamps and registrations. Then you get to pay for the firearm itself. A Class III M16 goes for approximately $15,000 these days.

Disagree. We need to adopt a more “in your face” attitude that shows we are not cowed or feel guilty about being gun owners. Look at what the gays did when they were spreading AIDS everywhere and killed millions. Rather than be ashamed about it and their perversion they took the offensive and demanded MORE rights. It worked great. We should do the same.
