Cuomo Vows to ‘Enact the Toughest Assault Weapon Ban in the Nation, Period!’
NY Observer ^ | 1/09 | Colin Campbell and Hunter Walker

Posted on 01/09/2013 9:16:05 PM PST by neverdem

One of the most hotly-anticipated elements of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s annual State of the State address today was his plan to enact “sweeping” gun control reforms in New York. In his speech, the governor outlined a seven-point gun control plan focused on “high capacity assault rifles” that he promised would be one of the “toughest” in that nation and lead similar laws to spread beyond New York.

“Gun violence has been on a rampage as we know firsthand and as we know painfully,” said the governor. “We must stop the madness, my friends. In one word it’s just ‘enough.’ It has been enough. We need a gun policy in this state that is reasonable, that is balanced, that is measured.”

The governor continued by saying his gun control proposals are not about “taking away people’s guns.”

As he has in the past, the governor tried to boost his credibility on the issue by emphasizing the fact he is a gun owner.

“We respect hunters and sportsmen. This is not taking away peoples’ guns,” Mr. Cuomo said. ”I own a gun. I own a Remington shotgun. I’ve hunted, I’ve shot. That’s not what this is about. It’s about ending the unnecessary risk of high-capacity assault rifles. That’s what this is about.”

To that end, the governor outlined the items on his seven-point gun plan.

“Number 1: Enact the toughest assault weapon ban in the nation, period!” he shouted, before ticking off his other new gun control proposals. “Number two, close the private sale loophole by requiring federal background checks. Number three, ban high-capacity magazines. Number four, enact tougher penalties for illegal gun use, guns in school grounds and violent gangs. Number five, keep guns from people who are mentally ill. Number six, ban direct internet sales of ammunition in New York. Number seven, create a state [National Instant Criminal Background Check System] check on all ammunition purchases.”

Mr. Cuomo predicted the rest of the country will follow New York’s lead and adopt stiffer gun laws.

“New York State led the way on guns once before. It was the Sullivan’s law of 1911, which was the first-in-the-nation gun control law. A model law,” he explained.

The governor’s address was over an hour long and included plans to; pass a “women’s equality act,” implement “a bar exam-type test that every teacher takes and must pass before we put them in a classroom,” raise the minimum wage, decriminalize less than 15 grams of marijuana, reform the NYPD’s controversial stop-and-frisk policy, open casinos around the state (but not in the five boroughs), drive commerce to upstate New York with a marketing push and to bolster infrastructure to be better prepared for natural disasters like Hurricane Sandy. In spite of all his other proposals, Governor Cuomo returned to gun control for the grand finale of his speech.

“I know that the issue of gun control is hard. I know that it’s political. I know it’s controversial,” the governor said, his voice rising with every word. “I say to you, forget the extremists! It’s simple: no one hunts with an assault rifle! No one needs 10 bullets to kill a deer! Too many innocent people have died already! End this madness now!”

By the end of the speech, the governor was shouting.

“Pass safe, reasonable gun control in the State of New York! Make this state safer! Save lives! Set an example for the rest of the nation! Let them look at New York and say, ‘This is what you can do! This is what you should do!’ This is New York, the progressive capital, you should them how we lead! We can do it! We’ve done it before and we can do it again.”

He left the stage to deafening applause from the assembled lawmakers.

Update (11:10 p.m.): NRA President David Keene responded to Governor Cuomo’s gun control proposals in a podcast interview late this evening.

And in other parts of the nation we have communities swearing to abide by the Second Amendment and are agreeing to elect their local militia leader, organizing a depot and training area.

Whole towns heading to some form of staging area for instructions of strategy, communication and general military procedures. All across America, it could be at a fairgrounds or convention center. Food supplies are being gathered and emergency shelters prepared plus any logistics needed to transport that areas militia to a strategic area.

Of course we don’t think this is happening because its not hitting the news, it is somewhere, right now. And if it hasn’t started in your area start asking why not.

Somebody in the know, please tell me the political party make up of the N.Y. House and Senate.

If it’s anywhere near 50/50 either way, this political bloviating bastard doesn’t stand a chance. Democrats are gun owners too. It’s the very far wacked out left that support these laws, not many of the law abiding democrats do.

Liberal insane bastard gov Pat Quinn just found this out in Illinois.

I'm glad he's doing this. It needs to be done. If you live in a liberal state and vote for liberals, you deserve to be disarmed. If you live in a liberal state and are conservative...leave.

The more liberal states that voluntarily disarm themselves the better. That will make it easier if and when the shooting starts.

All this will accomplish is to turn law-abiding citizens into felons.

These will be the new zombies in America and we need high-capacity magazines to fight them.

...This is not taking away peoples’ guns,” Mr. Cuomo said...

He's correct - it's the prelude to taking away the People's guns...

Cuomo is a shameless grandstanding demongogue. Always has been, always will be. He’s cut from the same crappy cloth a la Schumer & his mini-me Gillibrand. Too bad we can’t do a barkectomy on this mutt!

Remember...Andrew Cuomo is the only positive story for the Democrat party from the 2010 election cycle and since the the Democrats have lost ever more governorships. Of coarse, the mainstream media has lionized him and will continue to do so ever though he has no real accomplishments. His phony tax cap is a prime example.

Cuomo wisely co-opted his greatest likely critic in Fred Dicker (NY Post) by giving him an exclusive book deal to do a biography.

Cuomo is all about image management.

I submit this question for consideration, “How many enemies, foreign or domestic, criminal sand/or tyrants may I shoot before I must reload and how rapidly can I shoot them?” I submit to you that there should be no limit other than that of the military pattern firearm technology that I now possess.

The Sullivan law is a crock of crap. There are more unlicensed guns in NYS than registered ones. I grew up in NYC, I knew quite a few people who had all sorts of weapons. It hasn’t worked in the past and I don’t see it working in the future. Did Bernard Getz have a registered gun? I had an unregistered pistol taken from my car, it was an antique German/Austrian revolver. I reported it stolen, but was never prosecuted for it not being registered. The doper who stole it probably thought it was a 45 cal., If he tried to fire it, God bless him, it would blow up in his hand.

"Number four, enact tougher penalties for illegal gun use, guns in school grounds and violent gangs."
Hey asshat. You already have those "tougher penalties" on the books. And so does every District and/or States Attorney in the USA. They just have to opt to use said 'tougher penalties'. Which is; turn every 'gun crime' over to the U.S. Dept of Justice for prosecution.

Then instead of Career Criminal X with seven armed robbery convictions getting .. say .. two years is state prison -- with one year served -- he'll be looking at something like TEN YEARS in a federal prison, serving a minimum of 80% of that time.

But 'you guys' -- Dem Pols running urban Cesspools -- don't do that. Nope, that would get your voters mad at you because their (gag) Baby Daddy would be locked in a cage where they belong, so they -- 'Baby Mommas', Granny, Auntie, etc -- wouldn't vote for 'you guys' any more which could kick you all off the gubmint free ride and you'd have to find a real job.

So stop with the BS and just turn all 'gun crimes' over to the Feds for prosecution under the existing law. It's that simple.

Note
a) Not surprisingly, Chicago (Cook County States Attorney) has historically had the LOWEST number of 'Gun Crimes' turned over to the Feds for prosecution. One year in the not so distant past they only turned over something like FIVE Cases to the 'G'.
b) The idea for this law for Fed prosecution of gun crimes and the passage of it, was by .... tada! ... the NRA!

All over the great state of New York, one suspects that law abiding, tax paying, (sometimes business owning and employee employing) gun owners are planning to sell their homes (and businesses) and move to Second Amendment-friendly states.

Hey! How'd you know? I didn't tell anyone.

I remember reading that Lanza’s Bushmaster was found, unused, in the trunk of his car. Is that not correct?

They definitely won't make it past the third one.

If Cuomo makes it past the first two, #3 & #4 will be shoo-ins. He needs to be stopped on the very first one.

None of these new laws will have any effect on gun related crime. They still fail to realize that criminals don’t follow laws.
