White House Plans To Overwhelm NRA With Rapid Victory

The White House and gun control supporters are gearing up for a whirlwind month, with plans to pass reform legislation before outrage over the Sandy Hook massacre has a chance to fade.

While the fiscal cliff has dominated Washington’s attention in recent weeks, lawmakers and activists are laying the groundwork for their big push. Vice President Joe Biden, tasked with heading a commission to investigate gun violence, has been quietly meeting with experts, interest groups, and public officials and is expected to release a set of recommendations within weeks. Boston mayor Thomas Menino, co-chair of Michael Bloomberg’s Mayors Against Illegal Guns, told the Boston Herald this week that an optimistic Biden had assured him that Obama would sign legislation “by the end of January.”

“We had been led to believe their report would come by end of January, but we’re hearing they may want to have something out by January 15, even quicker than expected,” Mark Glaze, director of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, told TPM.

House Democrats are moving ahead with their own plans as well. On Friday, Rep. Mike Thompson (D-CA), chair of the newly created Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, announced the appointment of 12 vice chairs, including Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY), the body’s leading voice on gun control. According to a Democratic aide, the group plans to release its recommendations in early February and is already organizing public hearings on the issue.

Obama has personally identified an assault weapons ban and limits on ammunition magazine size as top priorities. Other possible reforms could include background check requirements for purchases at gun shows, a loophole that’s helped create a huge market of off-record arms purchases.

Pro-gun groups have dominated Congress in recent years and, while lawmakers approved by the National Rifle Association have mostly kept their heads down in recent weeks, any legislation could face an difficult path to passage, or even a vote, especially in the Republican-led House.

Glaze said his group would work hard to build public support, hosting local events with various mayors, dozens of whom will descend on Washington later this month for The United States Conference of Mayors winter gathering.

Gun violence survivors are also planning trips to lobby lawmakers to support legislation. Former Rep. Gabby Giffords, who survived a mass shooting in 2011, could play a prominent role in that regard: on Wednesday she met with Bloomberg in New York and on Friday traveled to Newtown to comfort families who lost loved ones in the attack there.

But Glaze acknowledged the NRA has long held an advantage not only in its cash resources, but in its large and active grassroots membership, which has rallied in the past to whip members of Congress against gun control bills. For gun control advocates, they’ll have to offer a compelling case that lawmakers who squelch reforms will pay a price in the midterm elections and that means building their own active network of supporters. Glaze is confident they can do so, citing recent polls showing restrictions on extended ammunition clips and an expansion of background checks to be popular nationally.

“The broad solutions are there and if Congress doesn’t act I think theyre going to be digging themselves further into a big hole,” he said.

The Brady Campaign, the gun control group founded by former Ronald Reagan press secretary Jim Brady, is also expected to play a role in promoting legislation, but it’s an open question whether they can compete with the NRA’s experienced leadership. TPM reached out to the group’s staff in recent days for information on its plans, but received no response.

I would call that action dancing on the graves of little children. Matter of fact, these communists were acting before the massacred children's bodies were cold.

Yep, time is a coming. Prepare accordingly.

You know, the one thing we were missing, was the left-liberal viewpoint on guns and gun-bans.

Thank GOD there was someone ready to cover this utterly uncovered viewpoint! Bravo, TPM!

This is pure Alinsky...trying to put a face on gun owners by polarizing the NRA.

The NRA doesn’t represent all gun owners, and all gun owners don’t necessarily represent the the NRA.

So “sheriff” biden is going to ride in and bombard the NRA with threats of taxes, regulations, etc., and maybe they’ll cave, maybe they want...but it won’t disarm America, not by a long shot.

obama’s quest to disarm America will not be as easy as was that of Hitler...America is much larger than Germany and our freedom was founded and has been maintained by the right to bear arms.

Remember when the government claimed that “rounding up” 13 million illegal aliens was an “impossible task”?

But, there is a lingering worry...for the past 25 years we have so willingly given up so many freedoms and rights, I fear that when obama says “boo”, we’ll all just surrender and kneel. He believes in kneeling you know.

Gun Violence Prevention Task Force

Rep. Mike Thompson (D-CA), chair of the newly created Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, announced the appointment of 12 vice chairs, including Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY)

Other vice chairs include: Rep. Ron Barber of Arizona, who worked for former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and was wounded when she was shot in January 2011; Rep. Elizabeth Esty of Connecticut, who represents the Newtown area, and Rep. Ed Perlmutter of Colorado, whose district includes Aurora, where a gunman opened fire in a movie theater last summer, killing 12 people and wounding dozens more.

Wait, I thought Harry Reid got the love and endorsement of the NRA, so I’m sure Reid will side with the NRA and against the gun grabbers, right?

Obama and the corrupt MSM are trying to make everyone believe that they have dictatorial power and anything they want to do is going to be done. That just isn’t so. The neither have the power, nor the votes to do whatever they want.

There will be no gun control other than what is practiced at the range.

Obama will slam the rest of his agenda down our throats as quickly as possible like he did healthcare. Legislative blitzkreig.

Will our side develop a means to cope? They haven't managed an effective reaction in four years...

This will be an interesting exercise to see if the media will continue to suppress the information out of Newtown.

1. He did not use the AR-15 to shoot the kids in Newtown.
2. He stole the guns from his mother.
3. He had been denied purchase of a gun already.

He believes in kneeling you know.See my post at #25. I concur with you. Everybody is running around thinking that whatever Obama says is going to happen. That just isn't so. Obama can pound his empty kettle, Biden, all he wants, he is NOT dictator yet and he cannot just wave his wand and enact crazy gun control.

I find this growing fear insane. People, including the corrupt MSM, think that just because Obama won reelection that he has this unlimited resevior of political capital that, like Darth Vader he can squeeze his thumb and index finger together and choke the life out of anyone or anything.

People need to stop cowering in fear of Obama and the corrupt MSM. We must rise up and say, NO MORE!

It is time to put the names, addresses, and pictures of all involved gungrabbers on an interactive map. Then let's see how that shakes out. It can be helpful both before and after any votes.

The gungrabbers are trying to do that to lawful gunowners. In fact, they are already doing it. Why should they object?

[[Remember when the government claimed that “rounding up” 13 million illegal aliens was an “impossible task”?]]

Impossible because illegals would not comply with the laws- however roundign up legal law abiding citizens woudl be a muhc easier task, and hte government has re4cords o nwhere all the law abiding gun owners are, so they won’t have to blindly hunt them down-

The ONLY way that peopel wil lresits is IF, and it’s a big IF, IF there is a massive demonstration and an organized effort to esist beign arrested with the use of deadly force- thsi takes a huge committment o nthe part of the people to step over that lien of ‘security’ into t5he unknown where they may have to actually use force to keep the governemnt from douign whatever the hell they want-

You may get soem small unorganized pockets of resistence, but a LOT of Americansd simply will not risk prison and will hand over their guns- it’s happende in coutnry after caountry, and our country is no different really— the ONLY way it could be different is IF, and it’s a huge IF, a massive band of civilians forms and declares in no uncertain terms that they will never hand over their guns and that it will take result in war IF the governemnt decides to do so- but this will take a massive organizational effort because peopel want to know thwey are joinign an organizatio nthat has a sliver of a chance of defendign itself succesfully before they will actually commit- lots of peopel talk a good talk, but when it coems to action they will lay down their firearms ‘peacefully’ not everyone, but a lot will-

No, I won't be polite about it. I'll be rancorous and loud and obnoxious.

This 'be nice' crap is why we're where we are.

Okay once and for all WAS the AR used in the shootings or not?
Early reports said no, but later reports state it was used. Do we know what happened?

It’s different than with ObamaCare. Republicans did not control the House at that time and were very limited in what they could do. Gun control will not pass the House.

The recent rout by Obama on the fiscal cliff gave us the advantage that Boehner is under far less pressure to give anything to Obama now. Second, I think Republicans are correctly just keeping their yap shut rather than drawing fire by announcing their opposition to any gun control.

We do need to but it’s not goign to happen- more and more peopel have attached themselves to the government teet and are not willing to stop suckling- America spoke loud and clear this last election- They want lies and destruction as long as they ‘get theirs now’ while they’re still able to- and they don’t care how the governemnt goes abotu givign htem theirs, they just want theirs- it’s a me me me generation- and too many peopel are too complacent and too ‘secure feeling’ snuggled up next to government to do what’s right anymore- America spoke loud and clear- America has changed for hte worse ande htis last election proved it- I didn’t think it was possible, but America proved me wrong when they reelected thsi blatant liar to office

Yes. All the children were killed with .223 rounds. Lanza wanted to kill as many people as possible. Why would he have left the most effective weapon he had at his disposal back in the trunk of his car? The weapon left in the trunk was a shotgun.

As much as I wish this wasn't an "assault weapon" related crime, fact is, it was, and all the conspiracy nuttery isn't going to change this.

Typical media misrepresentation as usual. If I were a Boehner who actually had a pair of balls, I’d wipe my ass with their recommendations at the House Docket, bang the gavel, and yell “Next order of business.”
