A three-month investigation into academic fraud at the University of North Carolina revealed that not only student-athletes were given added academic benefits within the school's African and Afro-American Studies department.
Rather, students at large benefited from anomalies specific to the department, such as unauthorized grade changes, forged faculty signatures on grade rolls and limited or no class time.
"This was not an athletic scandal," former North Carolina Governor Jim Martin told UNC's board of trustees. "It was an academic scandal, which is worse."
The independent investigation, headed by Martin, shows that irregularities in the African and Afro-American Studies department went back further than an original probe revealed -- to fall 1997.
However, according to the report presented to the board Thursday, no academic misconduct or other anomalies were found outside the AFAM department.

No one is going to hire them anyway, except for other universities.
Some folks just can’t do the work. Once upon a time, colleges tried to select people who didn’t need “extra help”. Lowered expectations (like elections) have consequences.
This is the School that has mandatory Koran reading, got rid of the " term freshmen" because of Gender bias.

Shocked that such a important academic department would be rife with fraud. I mean when someone wants to hire an African Studies scholar how will they know they are legit!
Wrong-o. They will be eagerly snapped up by the federal govt to be Obamacare, OSHA, EPA, Dept of Education etc bureaucrats and regulators.
Pretty sad when they’d rather throw their own entire University under the bus than their precious basketball program.
They could have told the ncaa it was a “computer glitch”, and emmert would be satisfied.
Meanwhile - another school who has always played by the rules - gets basically a death sentence for a criminal matter that still isn’t even resolved.
The fraud is strong here:
- The subject itself is fraudulent- what is “African-American Studies” exactly? What makes this a legitimate field of study? Does it have any use?
- The ‘academics’ who teach it are frauds with nothing to teach, except “kill whitey”, and “it’s all the fault of the imperialist/colonialist white male patriarchy.”
- The students who are taking these classes are doing so in order to attend a university for the sole purpose of playing sports, and not to get an education.
- The university itself has committed fraud by allowing this to go on, in the interest of sports, political correctness (itself a fraud) and “diversity” (another fraud.)
UNC-CH is a progressive flagship organization these days and everything UNC flows from that ideological wellspring. Chrissy Mathews is a UNC grad school alum, surprised? UNC...no thank you.
Anybody think this is just UNC?
Show me one picture, just one, of a WHITE student who benefited from the alleged scandal, and I'll believe it was "Just Academic."

Delegation of about 20 serious students (not on the world-famous football team)
Scene 1 (only scene):
Students petition President for improvements in their dormitory, which has been double-condemned by the Board of Health (Trojan-sized, cardinal and gold colored cockroaches marching up and down the hallways in attack salients) and the City Engineer’s Office (bricks falling out of the walls).
President rejects petition and shoos pesky students back to Stoned Hall.
Students complain that the University is about to spend $2 million on a brand new building just to house its football trophies, also that the football players come around Stone-Age Hall at all hours to collect impressive wads of $20 bills that are secretly dished out to them, apparently at will, in a tiny little un-marked office downstairs.
President, raising his voice while raising his well-fed arse from his very well-padded throne,
“you boys are a liability to this college. you cost us more than you pay us. those football players make us money. and the new trophy building will attract more rich alumni to campus who will donate even more money to this operation. so get back to your da*med books and cockroaches and just stuff it!”
Boys ushered out of President’s Office as President opens his beautiful big mahogany desk to bring out his silder liquour service...

I’m fairly certain that the majority of students in these programs are not student-athletes. Schools don’t have enough athletes to justify an entire department.

Our son graduated from the UNC’s B-school a few years ago and swears that UNC will never receive a penny from him...he is a fine young Christian who thinks that the entire school is so liberal and anti=Christian that it borders on communism...

You are so right! The solution, so far as I am concerned, is to do away completely with college athletics. But oh, what would students do for entertainment some would say. Colleges and Universities should be “institutions of higher learning.” I don’t understand why they have become “the farm system” for major league sports. Let the rich bastards who own the franchises, set up their own farm system outside post secondary academics. You can see the few schools who actually play by the rules, they have the loosing teams. And I will bet you that if you examine the “academic records” of the football teams, the only “value” from going to college was to try and get a contract with a professional sports team of one kind or another. I would also doubt if any “athletes” were so highly rated academically, that they switched their major in athletics to say, medicine or law! College athletics in nothing more than another manifestation of affirmative action.

I do not share your optimistic appraisal of the situation....
Did these students learn to hate whitey? If so, they should get credit because they satisfied the only coarse requirement.
