President Obama has, whether by design or not, chosen a fight on one of the issues that will define how we look back on his presidency.
The obscene massacre in Newtown shocked the nation. Yesterday, at lunchtime, I heard a man outside one of the shrines in the centre of town saying that he hadn't felt like this since 9/11.
This is not a pivotal moment on that scale, but it could be important nonetheless.
The president said he hoped memories were not so short that the shock of the killings had faded in a month's time when he expects a report on his Oval Office desk. Start Quote
Preventing some of the worst consequences of America's love affair with guns would be a very big legacy indeed
Many are cynical about this, and doubt the president's rhetoric will amount to much. But he will be hung out to dry if it doesn't.
He has gone out of his way to say that he wants action, not just words, and expects a series of concrete proposals that he will put in his State of the Union address at the end of January.
The president has called for a look into mental healthcare, video games and the culture of violence. But it is clear he expects Joe Biden to recommend a ban on assault rifles.
That means he is taking on a huge political battle that will rage throughout the year and probably for many years to come.
I am intrigued, more generally, by Obama's political game. Taking on Republicans in Congress, and then pointing out they stopped him from doing much of anything, doesn't have a lot of traction.

Its a distraction from his real job which is to get spending under control.
It’s just like a Kenyan to want to take away the Americans’ Bill of Rights.
Anyone doubt which side the BBC and the rest of the legacy media are on? Including at least half of the staff at Fox News. And did anyone think that he wouldn’t do this, once re-elected? He was just waiting for an excuse and had one handed to him on a silver platter. This is my line in the sand. Is it yours?
That's why I know Obamugabe has absolutely no real interest in looking into the psychiatric practice industry.
Obama thinks he can win every battle.
Not even close.
Yes, while the emotions run high, let’s hurry up and build upon that, rather than reason. We can’t let a tragedy go to waste.
He’s a marxist, and has been dying for an opportunity to go after guns.
“...Obama thinks he can win every battle....”
:::::::::::
As long as we have “Republican Leadership” like Boner, we will be losing EVERY battle that comes before the Congress. We are in big trouble. Boner should have been replaced ages ago.
“...Hes a marxist, and has been dying for an opportunity to go after guns...”

Yes, he is a Marxist. And specifically an America-hater as well. And playing politics on the backs of slaughtered dead adults and kids is standard operating procedure for this reprobate.
Maybe real Americans will now see that if they are part of those that did not vote for Romney might now realize they have reelected a dictator much like Hitler.
The fact of the matter is that nobody can show me even a single instance of a school shooting in the 1800’s when:
-there were no background checks
-there were no age limits
-there were no waiting periods
-there were no arbitrary gun restrictions
-guns were much more easily accessible to kids
-gun safes practically did not even exist
-gun locks did not exist at all
-lever action guns in skilled hands can fire almost as fast as a semi auto AR
With all of this, still nobody can show me even a single instance of a school shooting during this time.
It’s the culture stupid......it ain’t the guns.
And the Second Amendment was never about duck hunting or target practice; it was about stopping tyranny from taking hold. The Founding Fathers were very clear on this and this can seen in their opinions (”it is the duty of every man to at all times be armed”-Thomas Jefferson) The Second Amendment was meant to be a checks and balances, so to speak, similar to the three branches of government.
It was precisely designed to act as a Sword of Damacles, which hangs over the head over every single politician.
“When governments fear the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.”-Thomas Jefferson
wrong had line....the people who stole the election have ASSIGNED him gun control...
ya can’t prevail in the argument ..until you know what it is...
wrong headline....
All part of Obama’s rush to control the America he hates...
Lil Barry meets reality.
.
A bridge too far.
