A former U.S. Marine appears to be Fox’s primary source for the story. “From what I’ve been told, [spree killer Adam Lanza, above second row, second from the right] was aware of her petitioning the court for conservatorship and (her) plans to have him committed,” Flashman told Fox. “Adam was apparently very upset about this. He thought she just wanted to send him away. From what I understand, he was really, really angry. I think this could have been it, what set him off.” The Sun newspaper [UK] cites local plumber Peter Wlasuk, who says Adam Lanza lived in the family’s windowless basement where he played Call of Duty. FWIW.
First abandoned by his father, then abandoned by his mother. Now the State will take care of him (NOT).
I see that it didn’t take long for his father to find a replacement wife after the divorce.
Any guesses what some of the contributing reasons were for a young man who went beserk?
Good grief, did she have her firearms properly secured, then? Millions of people are losing access to normal magazines and firearms because somebody was careless and the monsters who are destroying our country were waiting with open mouths.

This seems to be a Phil Hartman story on steroids.

The poor woman couldn’t win. People have been excoriating her for not getting him enough help, now your lovely little comment about “abandonment”. Unless you’ve LIVED through this, you have NO idea what it’s like. It takes an immensely strong person not to crack.
She should have committed him long before that, but it’s very difficult. Supposedly, part of the divorce agreement was that his father would participate in any decisions involving his care, and I don’t know if that ever happened, either.
You actually can’t get somebody committed (particularly in CT, which is one of only six states that doesn’t even have involuntary outpatient treatment) even if you want to, so that part of the story is false. However, I think she was trying to get a conservatorship so that she could handle his finances, because his father was establishing a trust fund for him and his mother was trying to get him into an engineering program in a school in another city or possibly state. According to her family, she planned to go and live near him so that she could look after him and handle his affairs.
If that’s the case, she was certainly in denial, but that’s not uncommon with the parents of mentally ill children, especially if there has been a divorce in the family (probably contributed to by disputes over how to handle their son).
I’m going to guess the inherent mental illness he suffered from, but that’s just me.
A news radio report at 2PM today mentioned that she had traveled to several different states looking to move close by to a health care facility for her son. Maybe the engineering school was a tale she made up for casual acquaintances.
The entire story will takes weeks to come out.

No, she couldn’t. Her husband left her and started a new family. He kept in contact with the “non-damaged goods” son but supposedly had no contact with the “damaged” one. Should the mom have kept the guns locked up? Yes. However, what could she really do with her son?
I know a woman whose son has full blown autism. She takes care of his needs 24/7 including diapers, feeding, etc.. She told me that her hopes in life is that her son precedes her in death. If not, what will happen to him? An institution of sorts? Do you think a family member will step forward to take care of him (nice thought but I wouldn’t hold my breath). A close family member of hers actually suggested when her son was about four years old that he should have an “accident”. Essentially, telling the woman to kill him but make it look like an accident.
A lot of blame has been given to the Mom but I think in many, many ways her hands were tied. IMHO.
I am not shocked if the mother hid things from others to protect her son.
Instead she handed the kids four guns..../sarc.
Oh Lord. She was probably getting a bunch of government money for the care she “supposedly” gave him. At least we don’t have to support that drippy family anymore.
I’m all for the Second Amendment. But if I had a family member who I felt strongly should be committed, all my guns would go to a friend or relative’s house for safekeeping until that process was complete.
I doubt that at the age of 20 and having been out of school for several years that she was trying to enroll him into an engineering program out of state.
Odds are that it was an out of state psychiatric institution that she was trying to get him into with the promise that she would go with him.
But he’s now 20 — an adult — with no criminal record. How do you do that without his cooperation and consent??? If this is the direction she was going then there should be a paper trail.
And why file for Conservatorship of someone with no assets to conserve. If the father was setting up a Trust then he would name the Trustee not the state.
Couple fo observations here

Maybe the divorce was over how to care for the child. Or that the father wanted him committed and the mother did not at the time.

Last report I heard said a 9mm Glock, a 9mm SIGSauer, and a 223 Bushmaster M4 carbine, with the carbine being left behind in the trunk. So how many guns were used in the actual shooting? Three, four, five, it should be simple to arrive at a number...
