White House rejects Boehner “Plan B” with threat of tax hikes looming
Fox News ^ | December 18, 2012 | (Fox News’ Chad Pergram contributed to this report)

The White House on Tuesday rejected House Speaker John Boehner’s call for a fall-back option to avert the looming fiscal crisis, in a move the speaker’s office said “defies common sense.”

The feisty exchange came as both sides crept toward a possible middle ground in private talks. But underscoring the differences that remain, the White House resisted Boehner’s bid to craft a “Plan B” just in case those talks fail to yield a compromise before a Jan. 1 deadline—that’s when taxes are set to rise on everyone, followed by a wave of spending cuts.

“Every income tax filer in America is going to pay higher rates come Jan. 1 unless Congress acts,” Boehner said Tuesday morning, as he introduced his alternative plan. …

So why would Bonehead put his caucus in the position to vote for
tax increases? Most here can figure it out.

Boenher’s a fool. he could offer Obama 99% of what he wants and it’ll still be thrown back in his face.

What Obama wants is to go over the so called cliff and then blame it on the republicans.
I had thought that Boehner was just going through this drama so that the congress would not get the blame for failure. Now I'm starting to think you may be right about him being a fool. If he agrees to a one sided deal it will confirm that he has to be removed from leadership.

Why doesn’t boehner just pass a bill that the constituents of his caucus can support?

A tax bill and a separate spending cuts bill.

If either one is rejected then that portion of the automatic changes take place - sent by the democrats.

Stop letting the dems do his job while he tries to do theirs?

I’ve suspected for a long time that the WH/Pelosi have moles working for Bonehead.
They know EXACTLY what he has planned.

Plenty of firsthand, secondhand and apocryphal tales of Republican's staffers being on the other side philosophically; the tales of conservative constituents being mocked are not the stuff of legends.

The staffers are mostly statists. That's what they do.

If the GOP does get the blame it will be because the public has only seen
Bonehead out there in public, way over exposed, negoiating with him self.
Naturally the public will blame Bonehead because he chose high visibility.

RE :”So why would Bonehead put his caucus in the position to vote for

The tax increases are automatic per Budget reconciliation 2003 and an 2 year extension exactly 2 years ago.

What he is trying to do with a extension of the first $1M of income (for everyone) assuming that is really the figure, is to stop the GOP house from once again like a year ago (FICA payroll) taking a stand against middle class tax cuts,

Last year it was suicidal.

The big mistake he made was adopting the rheteric that extending the tax cuts is 'raising taxes'. That put him in a no win.

I just wish Boehner would sit down and shut up. Let the country go over the cliff and let obummer explain it.

Obama does not need to make any large compromises. Maybe a few bread crumbs, but as far as Boehner is concerned, he is going orgasmic over those few possible crumbs Obama is throwing out. Boehner is looking like a fool who is desperate for anything. A pathetic display of governance by Boehner (Look at the stuff he is JUST trying to deal). At least back in the day delegations just left, no-showed, or resorted to insults that led to duels.

We have debt and a shaky economy yet Boehner is negotiating for pennies, openly desiring for targeted tax increase, and raising the ceiling. Where is a fiscally sound version of Tip O'Neill?

I understand.

I would like the media to ask the question “Where are the compromises that Obama is making?”

The polls say that people want the two sides to compromise. The reality is that Obama isn’t budging. Boehner has to stop making up “plan B’s”...he needs to get in front of every camera and let people know that Obama refuses to make concessions and that this is now the Obama Fiscal Cliff.

Reports came out yesterday that Obama is upping the level for "the rich" (people over $400,000 now will have rate hikes), attaching COLA to the CPI index and not extending the payroll tax cut.

These reports have leftists hopping mad...not sure it's real though. May just be trial balloon.

Total capitualtion is the way that the “winners” assert to the world that the opposition has been totally, irrevocably, unmistakeably humbled and defeated. No magnamity, no mercy, no nod to the nobility of the opponent, victory is to be only complete and unconditional. And never subject to review.

There is a certain danger in being too eager to burn bridges as once you cross them - there is no route to retreat should a new challenge arise on your current path.
