They killed the children because they had given themselves over to principalities and powers; the rulers of the darkness of this world and to spiritual wickedness in high places.

I don't doubt this. The same nephew I just talked about above said he heard voices that would call to him from the basement, tell him to do bad things (he never said if they were the ones to tell him to kill his family). He also said he saw his grandfather "flying in the air" just days after he had died. He said the grandfather was there to "keep the demons away." So... I can believe it.

Half my family is on the “fuzzy edge” of the autism spectrum. Not one has ever gone on any kind of violent spree.

But, heaven forbid that anything should keep the armchair psychologists from spouting their untrained analysis.

They often have side effects worse than the initial problem. (for some people)

Amen. Our jails are full of people with mental illness that are all screwed up on meds. Add to that the rate of drug abuse such as high potency marijuana, meth, cocaine, heroin, and legal heroin like oxycontin and a poor environment and you realize they are statistically doomed. That is my opinion after two decades in law enforcement investigating serious crime.

You can look at the flyer photographs everyday or look around booking in the jail and see plenty of mental illness. Many of the folks in our prison system now would have been in mental hospitals decades ago. Evil must be addressed, and I am not excusing their actions, but many of my peers share this opinion.

I am not against “big pharma” in a traditional sense and believe in capitalism, but there is also little doubt in my mind that big pharma and politicians/government have colluded to give us this current mess. When you look at the amount of money involved in the psychotropic drug market and the statistics about how many patients are on public assistance (with little supervision or oversight) it’s frightening.

We are spending many billions of dollars each year and when you add up the costs in many cases it would probably be a wash to treat the worst cases institutionally.

WADR, I seriously doubt that.

He wrote a couple of papers which are being referenced to this day.

See post 79 -

There are many people with mental issues in good families and environments that are fine. I am not a mental health professional, but I do have 2 decades law enforcement (much of that major crimes investigations) and have several family members and close friends that are PhD psychologists. I have read quite a bit about mental illness and have discussed the topic at length for many different types and sat through more lengthy court hearings than you can imagine.

I think it is very healthy (and overdue) to have a conversation about mental illness and recognize that each situation is different and many factors are responsible for failures. People should not make sweeping generalizations about mental illness nor should people become defensive or angry about the discussion.

Sadly, too many politicians, talking heads, and FReepers misdirect the conversation to gun control when the underlying problem is mental illness that was not effectively treated. We need to respect individual rights and be able to respond to situations like the Aurora shooter who told his counselor what he was thinking of doing. We need to find the best balance we can... when a person with serious problems tells a counselor they are thinking of harming others they should be hospitalized until the episode passes. Based on my experiences those who are severely impacted by mental illness are never consistent and have good periods and bad periods. That is why treating severe mental illness with the same dosage and type of psychotropic drug is not always effective because it does not address the fluctuations of symptoms. It is also important to discuss the impact of long term dosing on the brain and I do believe in many cases there are permanent changes in brain function and chemistry. We need to recognize the impact of illegal drugs and drug abuse in combination with psychotropic drugs and mental illness.

It’s an overdue conversation for our nation and IT SHOULD NOT belittle persons with mental illness. Like many societal ills we need to ask if the status quo is preserved to protect the interest of big business/government over those we are supposed to help.

I know there are many employment opportunities that require something like an MMPI or MAPI and I can understand and accept that. But the clerk where I got my permit to carry? No way!

I also object strongly to what seems like an across-the-board policy to deny a gun license for someone in the military who has been labelled as suffering from PTSD. Should be on a case-by-case basis by a qualified professional, IMO.

This is just absolutely a hoot. Thanks for sharing. You know the House passed a Resolution to remove the word “lunatic”. Wonder if they would mind if we use the word “loony” instead to describe all of them except the lone Congressman from Texas who voted against it.

I know, I know.
OI am just saying it would be preferable to an all out gun ban.

If anything we should loosen gun laws.

You never hear of mass shootings at gun ranges.
People there are polite and disciplined.

An armed society is a polite society.

A while ago I stumbled across a forum for aspies and their families, http://www.wrongplanet.net/

It helped me understand a few things. It is a very busy forum though, I couldn’t keep up with it. But maybe it would help you two?

The folks on that forum also said that the movie “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” gave a good portrayal of what it was like to be an aspie.

There’s a good possibility that I have aspergers. I have all the symptoms but I’ve never been diagnosed. It doesn’t make me dangerous, any more than being dyslexic does. It just means that I process information differently.

Obama is going to find a boogie man.
Heck we are looking for a boogie man.
We all want answers.

There is no way the Dems will write a gun law that says **** happens.

It’s up to us to make sure they write no new legislation based on a singular incident carried out by a lone wolf, and if the left insists on a law we should insist that the law be people have the right to arm themselves and defend themselves from loony’s.

you post: “It might be that the shooter wasn’t evil but that he was just not in touch with reality. It is a shame that he wasn’t locked up in a mental ward.”

He couldn’t have been, not without HIS permission. Thanks to who? The beginning of the program towards gun contorl - see beleow.

MENTAL ILLNESS WAS THE WEAPON - as i was in allmost 100% of these mass shooitings: Mental illness and prescription drugs with proven, tragic side effects. (No committment and drugs: 2-prong Deliberarely Priming the mentally ill for violence?)

the GUN_CONTROL PATROL - from the Pres. on down - hit the airwaves while those little bodies in Connecticut were still in the school!(”Never let a crisis go to waste” on steroids)
using the horrific deaths of these little ones for their own agenda. Inhuman.

How about MENTAL HEALTH control? These tragedies started after the mental health hospitals closed and put the mentally sick loose on the public - and treatment of choice is Prozac, etc, - these shooters have almost 100% been on Prozac and related drugs, which have a PROVEN side effect of suicide and violence.!

Yet none of these sleazy politicians - or the media - mention we need more control and treatment over the mentally ill - and who triggered turning the mentally ill loose on the public? Pres. Jimmy Carter. - which is another reason it’s never mentioned. If these mental cases can’t get a gun, they use other means - like pipe bombs... It’s not the guns. I remember when the mental hospitals were closed - and mentally sick couldn’t be committed without THEIR permission! That’s like saying the drunk driver can’t be arrested without their permission.

post this link everywhere and anywhere you can - There are not many people today who know or remember why the mentally ill not only don’t get the treatment THEY need, but who explode with such violence on the Innocent.

So that would mean every state is an open carry state. And no permits required.

I’d be guessing lexapro and something else. prop early use of prozac as well.

Psychiatric side effects including insomnia (9%), somnolence (6%), decreased appetite (3%), and decreased libido (3%) have been reported. Abnormal dreaming, yawning, increased appetite, lethargy, irritability, and impaired concentration have been reported frequently. Agitation, jitteriness, apathy, panic reaction, aggravated restlessness, nervousness, forgetfulness, attempted suicide, aggravated depression, feeling unreal, excitability, emotional lability, abnormal crying, depression, anxiety attack, depersonalization, suicidal tendency, bruxism, confusion, carbohydrate craving, amnesia, nervous tremulousness, and auditory hallucinations have been reported infrequently. Aggression, acute psychosis, and visual hallucinations have been reported; however, a causal relationship with escitalopram (the active ingredient contained in Lexapro) has not been determined.

However, I’ve seen unbelievable cruelty toward kids with Asperger’s by teachers and students alike.

Yes, indeed! And all these articles blamming Asperger's for this slaughter are just going to make it worse. I suspect Schizophrenia (which often comes on in the early 20s) as a more likely cause. We'll never know because the shooter is dead.

Drugs can help the Paranoid Schizophrenic is some cases. I have one working for me who flipped out and murdered his mother about 29 years ago when he was about 22. He's my most valuable and loyal employee. But, he's medicated and closely watched by psychiatrists, social workers, and probabtion officers.

You do not know that the shooter wasn’t schizophrenia. That is a disease that comes on suddenly in the early 20s. He may not have been diagnosed, but we’ll never know.
