President Vladimir Putin has urged Russians to have at least three children as he said a resurgent nation should be a confident and “influential” power on the world stage.
In a bullish state-of-the-nation address in Moscow on Wednesday, Mr Putin promised to smite corruption, create millions of new jobs and boost Russia’s military might while warning that foreign meddling in the country’s internal affairs was unacceptable.
He claimed the country shared universal democratic values, adding: “Russian democracy is the power of the Russian people with their own traditions of national self-government, and not the realisation of standards foisted on us from outside.”
In characteristic rhetoric, Mr Putin also addressed internal as well as external enemies while suggesting a link between the two, saying that “chinovniki” (state officials) — often seen as corrupt caste bent on self-enrichment — should be prevented from keeping their money abroad.
“What trust can there be in a ‘chinovnik’ or a politician who says big things about the welfare of Russia while trying to take his means, his money abroad?” he asked MPs and senior officials. “I ask you to support legislation to limit the rights of state officials and politicians to foreign bank accounts and shares.”
He added: “Direct or indirect external interference in our internal political processes is unacceptable. Any person who receives money from abroad for his or her political activity and by doing so serves alien national interests, cannot be a politician in Russia.”

Putin might be having one of those “how did we get here” moments. A short history course might help him to understand. First came the communists, and waves of people were liquidated. It was a process which continued until Stalin’s death. When Stalin was young, he purged and executed the officers of his military. Hitler attacked, and 5 million military men were captured, of which 3 million died in captivity. The absence of competent military leaders revealed the folly of Stalin. Not to mention of course, the other millions of Russians who died in the war. Millions of lives wasted due to communism. Of course, those millions who died would have passed on by now. But those millions would have procreated and Russia would be having a different kind of population problem now. Hey pooty poot, in your quiet time, maybe you can say a silent prayer for those wasted lives in the war and gulags. And after prayer, curse the prior leaders of Russia.
He could also tell them to have three fewer abortions.

Yes. This says it all. Not all holocausts require barbed wire and machine guns. People cry here every day about “demographics are destiny” without thinking that our posterity has been minced up and run down the sinks, or chemically passed on in order to get a third car or more electronics or a second home.
Putin is a hard and cold man, a deadly man, but unlike any American president in the past twenty years, his sole focus is to make his country stronger, which is his job.
I recall reading once that any woman in the Soviet Union who had 10 children would receive a medal.
I’ve read Russia has lost more than 40,000 population centers down from total 158,000 it had in 1990, including over 200 cities.
Thus, they have a slight population growth since 2010.
Can Muslim Russians collect a bonus too? For having more children? I hear at least 35% of Putin’s army is Muslim
AFAIK today they pay some $15,000 for second and every next child and tons of other benefits. It doesn’t help much with native population but their immigrants are happy.
It was interesting that during the early Communist days (and as far back as they existed as a society), they had boatloads of kids. That was the only way they could repopulate so quickly after Stalin’s work and WW2. Now that they live in (relative) peace and much greater prosperity, they quit having kids - go figure.

Communism and Nazism decided they could raise children better than a wife and husband. I recall films from the ‘30’s about their baby factories with nurses changing diapers on an assembly line. The idea was that women would have the children and return to work while the state raised the children in crèches. This was dropped by the Germans and the Russians as the children so raised were not the robotic perfect citizens of the state that they wanted. Children raised by the state were useless.
In Russia, grinding poverty and the need to keep the entire workforce fully employed led to free abortions. Preventative measures cost money but abortions have been and remain free in Russia; the average Russian woman having somewhere north of four during her reproductive life. The grinding poverty remains, due largely to the crony capitalism that Putin profits from. (He’s Europe’s richest man. Notice also that Obama’s net worth had risen dramatically while in office.) So, abortion remains cheaper than preventative measures and having children dooms a woman to even less that life has to offer.
The solution isn’t asking or even demanding women have three children. By-the-way, three wouldn’t begin to cover the demographic disaster they’re facing. The solution is allowing the type of economic freedom the United States had during the ‘40’s through the ‘60’s. We no longer have that freedom either, but we have farther to fall than Russia.

In fact they had at least two baby booms: from mid-50s into 60s and another massive boom during Gorbachev’s presidency (1984-1991).

To be honest, depopulation started right after a Soviet collapse. With the exception of Civil War, 1932-1933 Holodomor and WWII Russia always had a massive population growth from 1918 to 1991.
BTW, “The Gulag Archpelago” required reading in their secondary school system since about 1985.

In 20/20 hindsight...murdering millions of your own kind is never a good idea - especially now when you see militant jihadis having several kids with several wives.

We can call Putin the biggest bastard that we want to, but it is HIM, not the United States, that is teaching his kids what the TRUTH of Communism is.
Having read half a dozen books on the Soviet Union, I can tell you, almost first-hand, that the SINGLE best way to get American youth to respect this country is to have them read what their “heroes” were really all about.
