Surprise: New insurance fee in health overhaul law

Your medical plan is facing an unexpected expense, so you probably are, too. It's a new, $63-per-head fee to cushion the cost of covering people with pre-existing conditions under President Barack Obama's health care overhaul.

The charge, buried in a recent regulation, works out to tens of millions of dollars for the largest companies, employers say. Most of that is likely to be passed on to workers.

Employee benefits lawyer Chantel Sheaks calls it a "sleeper issue" with significant financial consequences, particularly for large employers.

"Especially at a time when we are facing economic uncertainty, (companies will) be hit with a multi-million dollar assessment without getting anything back for it," said Sheaks, a principal at Buck Consultants, a Xerox subsidiary.

Based on figures provided in the regulation, employer and individual health plans covering an estimated 190 million Americans could owe the per-person fee.

At the same time, insurance companies as a whole will have to pony up $8 Billion (yes, with a Carl Sagan “B”), divided up by market share. Annually. Guess where that $8 billion will come from.

Plus, they rewrite the law as they go along.

When criminals take over the government, there is no such thing as "rule of law."

RELAX! That fee isn't for the insurance purchaser; that fee is on the insurance company, so you don't have to pay that.

Do I really need a sarc tag?

A pre-exisitng condition cannot be insured. Insurance does not apply. It is like saying you can “insure” a burning building after it starts burning. Absurd. There is no risk, just the transfer of money from a group that has no pre-exiting conditions by raising their rates to the group that already has a claim.

What the people should do at the next meeting with their legislators is to ask the said legislator to expalin and define in detail, not generalities, the actual content of the bill from cover to cover. Hold him/her to it. Hard, because aren’t they still adding onto it?

I'll sleep much better tonight knowing the insurance company will have to pick up the cost instead of me.

It's a new, $63-per-head fee to cushion the cost of covering people with pre-existing conditions under President Barack Obama's health care overhaul...but, but, but, but - covering pre-existing conditions is one of the two most popular features of Obamacare, along with allowing kids to remain on their parents' insurance until they're twenty-six - you mean there really isn't a free lunch???......

Former NY Lt.Gov and health care expert Betsy McCaughey interviewed with Rush, Hannity, and Levin, and I believe Beck, in the last couple years. I am pretty darned sure that she mentioned this early on. Rush’s anonymous health care insurance expert caller certainly mentioned this well over a year ago.

Odd this is being a “sudden” find for the Dinosaur media.

what is that “per head” business?

Is that per employee?

Or per every person covered?

So....is this more expensive for a family of 3 vs. a family of 5?
