Repression (what the Fed is doing now, and has been doing since about 2003) destroys all savings by stealth -- not just the much-smaller sums in the accounts under discussion. Even your piggy bank.
Repression = Deliberate monetary inflation + knocking down interest rates. Savers can't realize any interest/earnings on their savings, and meanwhile the Fed is sucking all the value out of those savings by printing extra funny-money which it then delivers to the Government to spend at pleasure.
The academic argument right now is between the deflation camp (Mike Shedlock and the Austrians -- I mention Mike because his pieces are often posted here in FR) and the inflation camp. The Austrians are basically saying, no, no, we have deflation because credit is being destroyed: ignore those price increases, inflation DOES NOT have anything to do with price increases.
Well, manifestly prices are increasing on a lot of things, so I don't know whom to believe in this faculty-lounge eraser-throwing contest. If Shedlock's right, you need to hoard cash; if the inflationists are right, you need to hoard gold, Australian dollars, Canadian mining and forestry stocks, anything (like Coca-Cola) with big foreign earnings, and overseas bond funds.
A hell of a lot is riding on "who's right?" but these guys can't get their act together since 2007 -- they've been arguing like cats and dogs for five frickin' years while everything goes to hell, and we're all standing around with our ****s in our hands, trying to figure out who's right.
The nightmare is that credit inflation and prices have now delinked and we get the worst of both worlds, like "stagflation" in the 70's. Hate it? Does it screw you? That's what you're going to get. How about that formula?
If you view deliberately impoverishing Americans to make them malleable as the desired policy end, then everything else seems to make more sense.
Although I suppose it could be the caffeine and sugar.
Wait until we get near to the end game and the feds “Securitize” the billions of dollars sitting in IRAs, 401Ks and company pension accounts.
Billions? I’ve seen estimates of up to $16.5 Trillion. And as far as an end-game goes... I think that we will see the effort of total Gun confiscation first and then the theft of the Various pension plans.
Why? Because people will only fight against authority when their back is to the wall. And the people are still too “comfortable” in their lives yet. Wait until they they are hungry from lack of food due to Federal programs and food confiscations. Wait until they are cold or too hot because the electricity is only on for two to four hours a day, thanks to the Smart Meters.
It’s coming I fear, when though? Probably sooner than we think, but the front cars of the roller coaster train have gone so far over the first hill that the last cars are being pulled along against their will. How will the end be? Will we pull into the station safe and sound or has the track been sabotaged and the train will go flying off and crash and kill or injure us all?
Hang on and prepare yourselves, we’re in for a H*ll of a ride! Or is it a ride to H*LL...? I really don’t want to know.

Remember the instances of people taking guns and going after some lawyer who they believe screwed them in court? I can see this happening to hospital employees and doctors’ offices because someone’s wife or kid was denied treatment. And it’ll more than likely be some liberal doing it. They’re typically first with a violent response.
