In an effort to help farmers across Minnesota who are facing uncertainty because a new Farm Bill hasn't been passed by the House of Representatives, U.S. Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) urged Senate leadership to include the bipartisan, Senate-passed Farm Bill in any deal brokered to address the nation's fiscal challenges.

"Minnesota's farmers, livestock producers, and rural entrepreneurs support one in five jobs in our state, and they need a new Farm Bill so they can plan for next year," said Sen. Franken. "The Senate has passed a comprehensive Farm Bill that will give our farmers the stability they need, but the House simply hasn't taken action. As we work to address our nation's fiscal challenges, it's critical to remember that our farmers need a new Farm Bill-that's why I urged Senate leadership to make passing this legislation a top priority."

The farm bill is the Agriculture bill. And the Agriculture bill is welfare, and farm subsidies like the dairy compact. If the House does not pass a farm bill, welfare is not funded.

The agriculture department should be slashed.

Tax and spend. Spend and tax. Tax and spend. Spend and tax. Tax and spend. Spend and tax. Tax and spend. Spend and tax. Repeat until the nation is destroyed economically but the peasants all vote Democrat.

Most of the money in that bill is for food stamps.

GOP should zero it out and say that in a time of economic uncertainty, paying farmers not to grow food is counter-productive. That would snatch the “popular” meme out from under the Dims for a change.

Exactly. It’s as if all our representatives are morons and can’t think their way out of the simplest of problems.

The fact that Franken (dim-bulb w/IQ somewhat below 50) is a senator tells us all we need to know about the senate. Standards? The senate don’t need no stinkin’ standards.

Let us hope that after CW-II, we can build and utilize enough guillotines to give these loons the proper dispatch.

the Agriculture bill is welfare

Yes, it is. BUT it is really about government control. The subsidies are generally small, the controls generally very large. My family has owned/farmed land in this county since 1889. Federal Farm Control began during the Great Depression. The whole farm program is an expensive way to stabilize farm commodity prices. It may have been well intentioned, but it a terrible bureaucracy.

Until Obozo I felt the farm program was the Fed's method of supplying cheap food to keep the masses from overthrowing the vermin in DC. Since Obozo, they plan to destroy all private farming. Just wait to see the consequences of that.

Uh..NO.

The last thing we the people want is another massive, convoluted, back room deal, shoved-down-the-throats-of-the-lawmakers-and-public-on-Christmas-Eve piece of legislation.

Gingrich was right...Break down the fiscal ‘cliff’ into a series of foothills. Break it apart into manageable pieces and push the legislation in parts. Come on Republicans, YOU are the Majority in the the HOUSE. Just DO IT!

I’m an active farmer and I agree! Stop the Subsidies, sure business expense are business expenses no matter what the business is. But Subsidies for planting Nothing? Subsidies to keep Milk at an artificial price, let alone Cane Sugar?

No! If the country needs to be put on a diet to get away from Government “cheese”, then all aspects of the country do. No one should get a preferential treatment via subsidies.
