It was a brazen and surprisingly long-lived scheme, authorities said, to help aspiring public school teachers cheat on the tests they must pass to prove they are qualified to lead their classrooms.
For 15 years, teachers in three Southern states paid Clarence Mumford Sr. himself a longtime educator to send someone else to take the tests in their place, authorities said. Each time, Mumford received a fee of between $1,500 and $3,000 to send one of his test ringers with fake identification to the Praxis exam. In return, his customers got a passing grade and began their careers as cheaters, according to federal prosecutors in Memphis.

It was all part of Clarence’s “No Hack Left Behind” program.
Makes one wonder how they got through college.
Why, he was just using his own form of affirmative action.
bttt
Almost certainly, this scandal will have a "disparate impact".
Sorry for such speculation...but you just know...
Ya know, while I'd suspect that's so, on the other hand I'd sure like to see how these cheating teachers' classes panned out (if the teachers didn't in turn engineer cheating for the classes, that is). It would be funny to find that, say, 5 years into the job there wasn't any discernable difference in the competence of the classes led by these teachers. Meaning the tests were largely irrelevant hooey, and that the degrees from schools of education meant enough.
Yeah, I say a pox on all their houses....
Yes, he was affirmatively enhancing his bank account.
They cheated.
Bump
Affirmative action.
Hey, if Ted Kennedy can do it, then why not teachers?
This sounds like state bar exams.
Test Question Number 1: List a 7 letter word that starts with “c”, and
is an anagram of “teacher”.
cheater... lol!
Not thinking much of it, I met with some of the other new graduates at a reception. People were talking about how hard the exams were, how they didn't know if they'd ever pass and I'd say at least 60% of the people there thought the exams were hard and/or did poorly. I was shocked.
Fast forward and one of those teachers is hired by my children's school and my daughter is put into her class. I went to the school and said I want a different teacher for my child for that subject. The school said that they didn't do teacher requests. I said I know she scored 40% on her first try on the subject area test and yet loves having the power to fail 13 year olds in the same subject. The class was changed.
I worked in education for a while and later left and started a business with my husband. I'm probably especially annoying to my children's school administrators because they know I know probably about 40% of teachers shouldn't even be in the profession for a variety of reasons. And I can pick them out from a mile away.
Anyway, I could have made some serious cash taking these exams for these people! I wasn't going to show anyone my results until all of the new teachers that had taken the exams started saying “She must have failed that's why she won't tell us.” That's when I got out my paperwork, and slammed it on the desk and showed them I had aced every one of them. One person said I was a genius. No, I'm not! I don't even think you'd need an education degree to pass these exams!
I was in my mid-30s. Had no schooling after high-school. Lady friend across the street came into my house one afternoon, handed me a piece of paper. Said take this test. She timed me, I took the test. I took 3.5 minutes to answer all the q’s on both sides. She graded it. I got 100%.
THEN she told me that this was the test currently being given to qualify teachers. They had 2 hours to take it and only needed 50% to pass.
The teachers state-wide were in a huge ruckus because the test was SO hard.
OMG.
I have to wonder if Clarence reportd this income on his Taxes. I’m betting the answer is no.
Liberal Arts. Nuff said..
How come I’m not surprised by these shenanigans by these Obama voters?
Certainly far from the old picture of the educated schoolmarm. She’d have been aghast to see such an easy test and learn that her posterity was having such trouble. Sounds like any reasonably educated person would do well on it.
Really, someone ought to come up with a laundered version of the test (same logic, but different answers) and publish it, free, to the entire world on the web. Just to show the whole world how easy it really is.
Thanks for your account! Police and Fire exams in many major cities have been dumbed down to fulfill racial (actually racist) quota system so why not teachers exams. I laugh when they puff up their chests and call themselves educators. Back in my public school days they called themselves teachers but were real educators, far superior to the breed we have today
Wait until you see what happens with medical training.

Not a problem. Well just do what Britain did when faced with the same problem. Import doctors from the third world and strip their medical system bare of professionals.

” Import doctors from the third world and strip their medical system bare of professionals.”
Already underway. So glad I spent most of my youth training..
I’ve thought about what advice to give my child about career choices, and have come to the conclusion that an important consideration is whether or not a chosen career is likely to have government intervention, or has government dependency. If so, think twice.
works at the voting booth too.
Just go to a local VA hospital and your fears will be confirmed.
check out this comment relating to importing doctors for 0-care to fill in the gaps. My point is there are many 3rd worlders who would love to be wage-slave doctors under 0-Care. Accepting compensation and working conditions our older American doctors would find insulting and will walk out on or retire >>>>>>

This is true, especially up in Canada. My friend lives in BC and the wait for a simple visit is 90 days minimum,no exceptions. And all or most of the docs are Indies. And the best part is most speak sh_t English so getting understood is even a problem. Start practicing your Hindi folks.

Shaw initially declined but, after meeting the teacher who needed the test taken, agreed to take the test for $1000. Shaw took approximately twelve to fifteen tests and was paid approximately $8,000," according to a statement issued by Stanton's office.

Yup, pretty much what I’d expect from public schoolteachers.
Public schoolteachers are, by and large, complete morons. Thank you for posting your experience, and I’m not surprised by it at all!
Remember that old ditty; “Those who can do, those who can’t teach!”
That is sad. I took the Praxis Exam and passed on my first shot and I am not an Einstein by any means. Truly if people have to hire someone to take that exam than I don’t know how they passed their classes in college.
This is another reason why I am so ademately against on-line college courses. How do we know it isn’t some wife or husband doing the course work for their spouse? I would ban all on-line classes if I were in charge. I know it is an easy money maker but I bet 99 percent of the student are big fat cheaters!!!!
Why are the feds involved?
Is this one of those charges that involves the ever creeping fed rule?
I think they should go to a more online based model. Do the course work online and go to the campus for testing. If you are interested in learning the material you could do that free online but any certification you have to physically go to the campus and get tested and pay for that.
Social Security and mail fraud.
Probably interstate??
I took a Praxis exam several years ago to qualify as a substitute teacher.
I scored 192/200.
It’s not a particularly difficult test.
The idiots in the classroom are the teachers; teaching their pupils to be idiots. Or Socialists. Same thing.
Yep, that’s exactly what I tell libs when they say what’s wrong with Obamacare? and I say two words “VA Hospitals” and somehow they get it.
He probably hasn’t filed for taxes in years.
