I've posted many times that I think FB is evil. Still do. And this may be the ultimate evil.
Facebook accounts cannot be deleted. With lots of diligence, you can figure our how to deactivate your account and that can be done. BUT, that in no way means your account has been deleted. Facebook is on the record (sorry I don't have a link) that accounts cannot be deleted and that Facebook retains rights to what ever you've posted.

I have a real hard time understanding people that post their entire life on Facebook, Twitter, Linked In, etc.
They don't seem to be able to understand that once you post something using one of these "services" that it's there forever. And ever.
I suspect that one day the chickens will come home to roost and there's gonna be a bunch of very upset people out there. Of course, by then it will be too late.

I can foresee a time when a forum like FreeRepublic could be an extremely useful place to establish covert communications between like-minded folk. For instance, one might generate a PGP key for use here on FR and post the public key here, where anyone could pick it up, or you could export it to any number of public keyservers.

Granted, normal key validation is not really practical here without physical meet-ups, and you have to take into account that a Fed is normally the 2nd or 3rd person who will show up anywhere where people would like to discuss goings on privately. They are sometimes pretty easy to identify, as they are the first and loudest person who wants to blow something up. Hell, you can tell that just by reading any number of news accounts. I also realize that just bringing this topic up casts a certain amount of suspicion my way.
Because of the way FR operates, it would also be really easy to employ steganography here. Post a pic with a message embedded into it, and ping the appropriate parties, and a message can quietly go out. If something important were going on, you could have someone that posts pics regularly be posting daily sitreps without drawing attention to it at all.
I realize that a public post like this isn't really the best initial comsec, but I'm more just kinda thinking aloud at the moment, and would be interested in feedback.

Thanks for the informative message and agree that you’d have to absolutely know your contacts in person...and not knowing a thing about PGP keys, I’d require a lot of training. Hope things don’t get to that point, but every day, things seem just a little bit worse.
There are a lot of folks here on FR who could give you pointers on how to do PGP/GPG. I think it would be useful to many and might just start a vanity someday soon for that purpose.

Well, quantum computers have been extraordinarily difficult and costly things to lash together, but they are being assembled now by US gummit researchers. They are fantastic at searching enormous search spaces because they can represent 2 raised to the number of bits in the CPU possibilities simultaneously. It’s like being able to get an excursion into that many alternative universes. The thermodynamics of your old fashioned von Neumann computations do not apply here.
Yes, they are up to about four bits, I follow some of the papers. I think we have a decade or two before we need to worry. Then I’ll switch to random detanglement encryption with noncoherent spin state, because by then our computers will also use QC at the core.

They need some pretty stiff cryogenics to operate now. If that can be brought up to, say, the temperature of liquid nitrogen, then it will be easier to get one in every office, if not in every laptop. STILL, Uncle Sam’s machines will be on the cutting edge. The impractical does not stop them.
