Hostess says liquidation decision expected Friday (Going Galt)
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | November 15, 2012 | AP

Hostess Brands Inc. said it likely won't make an announcement until Friday morning on whether it will move to liquidate its business, after the company had set a Thursday deadline for striking employees to return to work.

The maker of Twinkies, Ding Dongs and Wonder Bread had warned employees that would file a motion in U.S. Bankruptcy Court to unwind its business and sell off assets if plant operations didn't return to normal levels by 5 p.m. EST Thursday. That would result in the loss of about 18,000 jobs.

Snip

The Teamsters meanwhile are urging the smaller union to hold a secret ballot on whether to continue striking. Citing its financial experts who had access to the company's books, the Teamsters say that Hostess' warning of liquidation is "not an empty threat or a negotiating tactic" but a certain outcome if workers continue striking.

“That would be the best thing for employees,” said Ron Hopkins, vice president of the AFL-CIO’s Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers International Union Local 103 in Orlando.

Permanent unemployment would be BEST?

Just wow.

They did exactly that at Harley Davidson in York, PA when Ronaldus Magnus was POTUS. Then as the product was improved, the company.....and employees thrived, it went to their heads. And they (the union) came within a gnat’s whisker of blowing it off and having the company move elsewhere. Thankfully, the employees came to their senses before it was too late.

For the unions, let them eat Twinkies.

Alternatively, they can have bread and fish (in the street meaning of biblical times.)

The jobs will come back, just not union.

Did you mean:

The jobs will come back, only they'll be in right-to-work states.

How do you tell when your union leadership has gone off the deep end? When the Teamsters sound like rational people.

If nothing else, this thread has taken me for a fond trip down memory lane.

Breakfast in college was always a package of Suzi-Q's and a Mountain Dew.

In defense of the Teamsters ...

That union approved the court-ordered labor settlement and advised its members to go back to work. It's the 5,000-member baker's union that is not willing to sign onto the deal and is threatening the jobs of all 18,000 employees.

Goodbye Hostess! Loved your snacks when I was a kid. I am more of the LD Oatmeal Creme Pie these days anyway.

Look for the Union Label!

The company promptly shut its doors for good. 60 dumbasses out of a job. Of course, the union heads are still employed.

I still recall how proud the thug union bosses were when they put Eastern Airlines out of business... "We call the shots!" The union has the power to put the company out of business... How many THOUSANDS of union workers lost their jobs back then?

Mark

...they'll be in right-to-work states.

Eventually, yes, in the long term only right to work states will have the possibility of permanently sustainable jobs like these.

I rarely, if ever, buy their products simply because they are twice as much as the competing products.

How much more do these union morons think they can get for a box of these snacks?

That said, when I was a kid I musta ate a million of the Yankee Doodles. I don't think they make those anymore but I might pay a pretty penny for a box of those.

The strikers want it to shut down, they think new owners will preserve their pay nd benefits.

If the government steps in to help the union workers (as it did with GM), the new owners will preserve the pay and benefits.

Seriously.

Better to cut off your own testicles with a clean slice than have the government do it with a rusty and dull blade.

Woody Harrelson is not going to be happy about this.

Because he thinks with his Woody, or because he is a Twinkie?
