Storm-ravaged and weary Rockaways residents cornered Mayor Bloomberg yesterday to angrily demand more aid for their devastated neighborhood.
“When are we gonna get some help?” blasted one desperate woman, who had to be held back by the mayor’s security detail as Bloomberg stood by with a deer-in-the-headlights look.
“When are we gonna get some bleeping help?” she demanded.
“There’s old ladies in my building that don’t got nothing,” lashed out a man on video caught by a NY1 reporting crew.
Bloomberg’s trip to the Rockaways wasn’t announced and wouldn’t have been caught on cameras if the news crew hadn’t happened to run across him. Back in City Hall, he expressed sympathy with the residents’ plight.
“I spoke to many people who were worried, frustrated and cold,” Bloomberg said. “There’s no power there and temperatures are dropping. Even those who have generators are having a hard time getting fuel.”
The Rockaways’ situation is among the most dire of any of the city’s seaside neighborhoods...

People are doing just that. But neighbors joining together cannot restore the electric grid or make supply trucks arrive. This is one of the things the government should be doing, otherwise there’s no point in paying income taxes.
Given the scope of the storm and population in the affected area I must say that I am amazed at the progress made so far. (No, I don’t give the Big O the credit.)
I’m not really familiar with the areas affected but it looks like there are areas still flooded and inaccesible to first responders or utility crews until recently. One cannot really stage a rescue mission until after the disaster has stopped happening. Even then the rescuers can’t show up the minute the wind stops blowing.
This did, indeed, turn out to be Frankenstorm...with more yet to come. I worry about all affected...but especially the elderly that may not have family close by or friends able to help them.
I understand both sides. The frustration of the people and the limitations of the rescuers. It’s a very bad situation.

Rockaway is an island that is on the southern coast of Queens (one of the five boroughs that make up New York City.) This is a beach community that has never had a storm of this magnitude hit. The city has not made good progress getting disaster relief into these cutoff and hard hit areas. The national guard should be there distributing water and MREs. ConEd (the local utility) should be a government entity the way that they have managed this storm.
I am very disappointed at the way that Bloomberg has managed this disaster.
The nonunion crews who were turned away were not turned away by the customers. They were sent letters/emails by the IBEW fraudulently telling them that unless they unionized or contributed money to IBEW pensions, they were not legally allowed to come.
All this was done sneakily, because the unions knew that if they tried to get the public to protect their monopoly, the public would tell them to go procreate with themselves.
In Port Monmouth NJ today, Italian restaurants were offering free meals to power workers from right-to-work Georgia. I'm sure local IBEW members are quietly fuming about that, but they wouldn't dare open their mouths about that now.

Thank you for your insight about the area. I have never been there and rely on maps.
I am no fan of Bloomberg and have no first hand knowledge of ConEd.
I do know that in my area, the most heavily populated areas are top priority. The out lying areas are the last to receive assistance. I understand that. (I live in an out lying area and have experience.)
I will say that Bloomberg trying to carry on with the marathon was goofy..even if he later backed off.
From what I have read, Rockaway (and other areas) have been so devastated it is very hard to access. I’m not sure that the residents of the area realize the extent of the damage or the number of people affected by this huge disaster.
I also understand that people didn’t take this storm seriously and evacuate. They should have. But hind sight is 20-20 I guess. I think due to the unanticipated number of people affected...supplies ran out.
My biggest worry at this point (aside from the elderly) is the storm that is forecasted to come in this week. Where in the heck would all these people go?
You are correct. I think that many people felt that this was an over-hyped storm. I admit, the weather folks do make every storm a hysterical event. As for me, if I lived on a barrier island and knew that a humongous storm with unprecedented tidal surges was expected, I would evacuate. I am inland, but hunkered down and had ample food, water, guns, generator, fuel, chain saws, etc. I am astounded at the lack of planning of my own neighbors. We New Yorkers have an arrogance about us. Some people will never admit that Mother Nature always wins.
ConEd was noticably absent from the northern suburbs until later in the week. They were all over Manhattan.
I have a friend in Rockaway whose house is still standing, but was completed flooded and damaged. He lost everything including his vehicle. It is cold here tonight—about 40 degrees. I am putting dry goods together for a local relief effort. I am so thankful that I am safe, and I pray for all those who are suffering.
The leadership in this state is disgusting. From Bloomberg to Schumer to Cuomo. They all stink. The media is blowing over many of the horror stories and the awful condition of the outer boroughs (Staten Island and Queens.)
