Early briefings on Libya strike focused on Al Qaeda, before story changed
Fox News via PatDollard.com ^ | 10/29/12

Posted on 10/29/2012 3:51:00 PM PDT by JihadiKiller

FYI, Catherine Herridge is the reporter who has been busting this whole story wide-open from the beginning. So far, she has the best inside sources actually willing to talk. She’s the one who first reported that the admin 3 times denied a rescue team for the ambassador…

Excerpted from Catherine Herridge’s report today in Fox News: Two days after the deadly Libya terror attack, representatives of the FBI and National Counterterrorism Center gave Capitol Hill briefings in which they said the evidence supported an Al Qaeda or Al Qaeda-affiliated attack, Fox News has learned.

The description of the attack by those in the Sept. 13 briefings stands in stark contrast to the now controversial briefing on Capitol Hill by CIA Director David Petraeus the following day — and raises even more questions about why Petraeus described the attack as tied to a demonstration.

Fox News is told that Petraeus seemed wedded to the narrative that the attack was linked to a demonstration and was spontaneous as opposed to pre-meditated.

Fox News is told that Petraeus was “absolute” in his description with few, if any, caveats. As lawmakers learned more about the attack, including through raw intelligence reports, they were “angry, disappointed and frustrated” that the CIA director had not provided a more complete picture of the available intelligence.

I have never been a fan for Petraeus. There was just too much hype about his service. I was thinking of past generals such as Arnold and Clarke most recently.

“We don’t know anything about what’s going on behind the scenes. Petraeus might be doing all he can to defend America from the monster that is Obama.”

The old Bill Clinton concept. The American people can never know their heroics, because it’s secret. But trust them, they are working so HARD for us. Like Valerie Plame.

Face facts, whats going on “behind the scenes” is ALwAYS them positioning the American people for a good solid A$$ raping. Think of every single secret program that gets exposed. Fast and Furious, Climategate, “Flexibility” with Russia, hidden treaty behind secret deal. The only one on our side i can think of was Iran Contra. Supplying anti communists, and getting hostages held for years released.

But they are not working behind the scenes for us. Most of their secrecy is not operational today, it is that they know they are doing things that will screw the American people, and we wouldn’t like it.

Like in this instance, there probably was a gun running operation or something. But they are hiding another scam.

I see so many here in disbelief that the General could go to the dark side. I am not surprised since he agreed to become a part of this regime in the first place. When he took an operational demotion to stand in for McCrystal, I knew something was up with him. Then to oversee a surge in Afghanistan with no teeth with respect to ROE, I knew he was a stooge. I am almost to the point to think the surge in Iraq was supposed to fail which explains the stupid remarks by all the Dems before the surge even started. Again, reality and the sheer determination of other field officers made it work despite the best laid plans for it to do otherwise. As I recall, it was a field general who actually devised the plan to make local Iraqis a partner in eradicating AQ and it was his working plan that Petraeous and Crocker took most of the credit for.

As I have said before, there was a very logical reason for authorizing no action to the attack. It was supposed to be the means to supply Ansar al-Sharia with a head to barter for the release of the Blind Sheik of which reports were surfacing shortly before 9/11/12. The problem is that Stevens was not aware of the deal and sought refuge in the safe zone in the building. When the AQ nuts could not get to him, they figured they could smoke him out. Whoops!

The drones were up there to record the ambassador being walked out with his hands up and that is why no order was issued to rescue him because the exchange was to be his rescue. When that didn’t happen and nobody knew where he was, they then panicked and the whole thing began to unravel.

Now we have the leader of that group who openly in public mocks the US while sipping on his mango juice. He knew the plan and when it blew up, he had the info to bury them and is set to be released in the event of his untimely demise. He has the blackmail info tucked away and will use it to eventually demand the release of the Sheik in exchange for the info being destroyed.

That is my estimation as to what is going on.

You may be right. But Petraeus was once a good soldier and held honor high.

I know that Generals are not quite so honorable in that they must practice politics to get to that rank.

That said...I am willing to wait a little while to see if he show his true colors.

“CIA Director + CIA assets and Operatives = Petraeus knew and probably devised the gun running scheme (or worse).”

I agree. This explains the cover story...it’s to save his own hide.

That's very good, and having read McCarthy's books and most of his NR columns, I'm surprised I wasn't aware of that one.

McCarthy's argument is well reasoned and charitable, as always, and if anything he displays too much deference; but again that is his nature (kind of odd for a prosecutor, but ...) I think he defended Patrick Fitzgerald -- with whom he had worked to prosecute the Blind Sheik -- too persistently, for instance. But I do trust what he says. Thanks for the link.

He wasn’t “excused.” He was given unconditional immunity by jackasses who thought he would trash his boss, which he refused to do. Too late, the Dems realized they’d been had. It was a glorious moment.

I would pick Lt Gen Mattis.

The impression I got from my readings is that Petraeus had a more academic background than many of the commanders of the early phase of the Iraq war.

If he does not apologize and explain

then he is quite deep into the TREASON,

Not just Petraeus.

Chairman of the U.S. military’s Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Dempsey KNEW Benghazi attack, presumably watched our men being cut down, yet for reasons unknown, hassled a private citizen (Reuter via HuffPo 9/12/2012 ) Terry Jones to shift blame from Obama WH.

I know Panetta is a politic hack and a communist to boot, but Gen Dempsey expects our military serving men and women with the highest honor, loyalty, and integrity, even though Glen Doherty and Tyrone Woods were no longer ‘active’ military.

Where are yours, sir?

Petraeus is a military man who has spent his life respecting the chain of command and loyalty to his CinC. That he would initially react in terms of his lifelong ethos is not to be dismissed lightly. That he broke his silence on Friday is an act of heroism given his position and circumstance.

I am going to try to reserve judgement until some time has passed and there is a better picture of what happened. I think the truth should eventually come out...or at least I damn sure hope so.

While there were some things I didn’t agree with Petraeus on, but I thought he did a good job in a difficult spot.

Going to work for someone like Obama can destroy a man. I hope that isn’t the case here.

The reference to Marshall Ney is a troubling one, if I read the history correctly.

Never trust anyone that agreed to serve under Obama. Never. The worthless Robert Gates is a prime example. Bush’s secretary of defense, then he agreed to serve under Obama. That should have told anyone that he was a liberal. All doubt disappeared when he lead the charge to lift DADT and he was the main reason sodomites now openly serve in the Armed Forces.

Admiral Fallon was right about him years ago. He was always a little tool of the neocon/McCain/Graham crowd.

I can’t find it on Google right now (the storm is playing havoc with the internet & FR), but I remember some old-timer saying that George Marshall and Douglass MacArthur always testified to congress in a suit & tie. But, you’d never see Petraeus without his chest full of every decoration he’d earned.

What are people here talking about...?!?!?

The CIA was told to stand down 3 times, Patreaus has his cover story.

The screwed up arms trafficking operation was run by Stevens (the State Department), again no blame for CIA/Patreaus.

Patreaus can go ahead and blame it on ‘The Sound of Music” or maybe “Phantom of the Opera” as a matter of opinion or assessment...who cares...it doesn’t matter -his neck isn’t on the line.

Patreaus already passed go and collected $200.

"that is very disappointing"

And, very odd that he would be so sure. Unless he was ordered to go with the narrative the POTUS and SOS were parroting out and they all felt the narrative was fool-proof.

Join the narrative or else - end of career or something such.

What is he saying now, if anything. (I need to read the whole thread before I ask questions, I guess).

Are his whereabouts known?

Just curious - not implying anything - just curious.

Unwelcome comment perhaps, but I have a relative who worked with Petraeus in Iraq and found him the ultimate self-promoting careerist. It’s his opinion, not mine, but that’s what he told me.

“The simple fact that he has not resigned in order to preserve his honor indicates that he has none.”

Petreaus has earned some credibility: If he has not resigned to preserve his honor we should at least consider that there might be a legitimate and honorable reason for him to not resign.

What is a legitmiate and honorable reason to allow a seal to paint a mortar position for seven hours with his laser while it adjusted its fire to his position and not fire on it?

And then it killed him and it still was not fired upon.
