Rain or shine, storm or fair weather, the proud soldiers of the "Old Guard" are always on duty standing their post.

Thank you for posting this. Deeply meaningful.

This photo could function as a Rorschach test for American patriotism. To the degree you don't 'get it', is the degree you don't 'get' duty, honor, & country.

This photograph is the epitomy of commitment and of honor.

Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty showed the embodiment of commitment and of honor.

The Pride of America is not lost...........

When hurricanes Irene and Isabel hit the area, wind gusts would get up to maybe 60 mph. If wind speeds hit 120 mph in Arlington National Cemetery from Sandy as some are predicting, I can virtually guarantee you they will not be out there standing in it. They wouldn’t be able to stand at all. They are not stupid or suicidal. See the chain there? Thats a flight of stairs up to the Trophy Room of the Memorial Ampitheatre. It overlooks the Tomb, and the Sentinels would have a total, unobstructed view of the Tomb from it if any tourist was stupid enough to be out sightseeing. They would still be on post without risking their lives in 100 + mph winds.

This commitment to duty, honor, country and fallen warriors of the brotherhood has absolutely NOTHING to do with “tourists” or “sightseeing”...
I am positive from your post that you would be in the shelter of the Trophy Room, but for you to answer to the dedication and commitment of these young men is ridiculous.

Are you trying to lecture me about the Sentinels at the Tomb of The Unknown Soldier??? Perhaps you skipped over the part where I said they would still be ON POST and GUARDING the Tomb from the Trophy Room. They would NOT be deserting their post.

In the photo, do you notice the drop off behind what Tomb Guards affectionately call The Rock? It’s a long flight of stairs down to the two sidewalks in the photo. Thats where the walking mat (the mat the Relief Commander is standing on in the photo)was located in 1974 as the plaza was being prepared for the Unknown from the Vietnam War,,, the bottom of that long flight of stairs. During that period, the Sentinels were further away from The Rock than the Trophy Room is from it. But they were still on post and on duty. Don’t you EVER accuse me of questioning the dedication and commitment of the Tomb Guards. To the contrary, YOU are the one who is insulting them by assuming they are mindless robots too stupid to seek some kind of shelter in 100+ mph winds.

Thanks for that info. I’ve wondered what they do when it is so severe it gets to the point of endangering their life.
