Referees to throw pink flags in Miami Dolphins-N.Y. Jets game
NFL ^ | October 24, 2012

Gloves and shoelaces won't be the only pink items on the gridiron this week as the NFL continues its recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Referees working Sunday's game between the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets at MetLife Stadium will call penalties by throwing pink flags. The move to ditch yellow and go pink was the brainchild of a fifth-grader, who suggested the idea in a letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

How about pink bases? Being a woman I understand this cancer. But to shove it in the face of guys for a whole month is stupid. Where’s the prostrate cancer awareness month? All these organisations want a month awareness for this and that. We have black history awareness month and Hispanic month and Asian month. We only give two days a year to our servicemen and women, Nov. 11 and May 30th. Well okay, the government made it a weekend. For car sales and stuff. I will come up with a ribbon that I will attach to the pink ribbon as Prostrate Cancer Awareness Month. Need A cool color.

“They want people to be aware of the fact that breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death among women.”

Roughly the same number of men and women die each year in the USA from breast cancer and prostate cancer, respectively.

In fiscal year 2009, breast cancer research received $872 million worth of federal funding, while prostate cancer received $390 million. It is estimated that fiscal year 2010 will end similarly, with breast cancer research getting $891 million and prostate cancer research receiving $399 million.

Private charitable funding is similarly disparate.

In short, men don’t matter.

We exist to protect, work, and die when no longer useful.

There’s a fine for every player who does not wear official NFL sanctioned gear. It used to be $100, years ago, probably $1000 nowadays. The fines are donated to NFL charities, normally, but the pink fines are donated to breast cancer research.
So, every player you see wearing a pink item, gloves, shoelaces, etc, is making a ‘donation’.........

Prostrate cancer awareness month was September and it has a light blue ribbon. Everybody gets days, weeks or months. At least the 2 days we give the military are days off.

That is what I always ask. I think it’s nothing more than “feel good” crap. Why not use the money to fund mammograms for women who can’t afford them instead? I think everyone is aware of breast cancer. Oh, and don’t send them to Planned Parenthood - they do not do mammograms, despite what idiot Obama says.

Also, making NFL players wear pink is just further sissification of men.

P.S. - I am a woman.

Just got back from the market, and everyone was dressed in pink, there were pink balloons, pink decorations, I am sick of pink.

Me too! I deliberately chose not to purchase anything at the store that had cutesie pink ribbons on it. (And dang near everything did!)

Gag, it's not like any of that money actually makes it to research and possibly development of a cure.

Never seen it advertised anywhere. So did the women wear a light blue ribbon? I’ve never ever seen signs stating it was Prostrate Awareness Month anywhere. Not on TV, not on radio and never during any sport presentation. Maybe they thought it sexist and never mentioned it. As for our servicemen and women - what is their month? Like American Service Men And Women month. Only way we know it’s coming is by the sales adverts. (Veterans Day and Memorial Day sales.)

It’s all about having a PR organ. At all times there’s some disease “charity” that reigns supreme. Used to be Jerry Lewis and the MDA and you couldn’t get near a cash register in the summer without seeing some change collector for “Jerry’s Kids”, once upon a time Easter Seals was king with their logo everywhere, now Komen turns the world pink every October. Somebody Komen will become passe and some other “charity” will rise to the top. Get a good spokesman and it could be prostrate cancer they’re pimping.

At least Memorial and Veterans days are days off for a lot of people. And they get parades. Parades with military hardware. Really they’re much cooler than the ribbon festivals everything else gets.

Agreed.
Funny thing is the local market is Ralphs which is part of the Kruger company, and they do support ovarian cancer research, on some of their named products they is reference to ovarian cancer written very small lettering.
I am sick to death of the walks and the pink, no one every had their lives saved from a stroll in a pink shirt.

Never put my daughter in pink, I have never worn pink, and I also do not buy anything in pink. Once even bought something with pink ribbon by mistake and took it back.

Why would you bring logic to the NFL? Your reasoning is sane and no one is listening.
Breast cancer effects one out of eight women where as men are one out of six to get prostate cancer. The rate in black men is one out of four.
