The truth about the tea party
politico ^ | 10-20-12 | Joe Scarborough

"Why is the Tea Party destroying the Republican Party?”

That’s a leading question that I have been asked repeatedly from media pundits and Democratic politicians over the past three years. Over that time, Democratic politicians and media pundits have almost universally accused the Tea Party of bringing ruin to the Grand Old Party. According to this skewed narrative, Republican leaders were once bipartisan, rational and almost worthy of getting invitations to Georgetown cocktail parties. Now they are Manchurian candidates held captive by the right-wing beasts whose only goal is to infect the minds of real-life Nick Brodys who dominate the U.S. House.

Sometimes, mainstream publications and Democratic leaders even go so far as to say kind things about Ronald Reagan as a way to attack the Tea Party. They speak glowingly of Reagan and contrast him with the barbarians who now run the Republican Party. This, of course, conveniently overlooks the nasty attacks Reagan once endured at the hands of those who now cynically praise the 40th president.

But let’s not get bogged down by history. Instead, we can blow apart this fanciful meme by reviewing the Tea Party’s short history. Let’s simply review how terrible the Tea Party has been for the GOP.

— They energized a conservative movement battered by eight years of bloated Republicanism,

— they shocked the political world by taking Ted Kennedy’s seat

— they put Obama Democrats in a constant defensive crouch

— they led the resistance against Obamacare,

— they helped bring about the largest legislative landslide in U.S. history in 2010,

— they grabbed six seats in the U.S. Senate that year,

— they helped elect six governors,

— they helped win 700 seats in state legislatures, and

In regards to the Missouri GOP Senate primary, wasn’t the TEA Party supporting Sarah Steelman, Missouri’s former state treasurer? I remember seeing images here on Free Republic of Sarah Palin campaigning with, and on behalf of, Sarah Steelman, not Todd Akin.

You consider Brown no “Tea Party” due to his abortion stance, but please consider the following with regard to that issue:

If a SCOTUS appointment (or any other judge, for that matter) were to come up, and an anti-abortion candidate were to be nominated, do you believe that Brown would vote against that candidate?

Moderates are nothing but lying manipulative bottom feeding scum.

If that offends you, you are a moderate lacking the courage to be the democrat you really are and utterly unworthy of the slightest pretense of respect.

Scarborough is a true MSNBC kook, in my view.

In the full article, he states, “... [the] so-called conservative [GOP] party had shoved through a $7 trillion Medicare drug plan...”

Needless to say, this statement bears no relation to reality. It seems he took the Wikipedia article about Part D, and multiplied their 700B$+ number by ten or some such.

Reality is that PartD was estimated by CBO in 2004 to cost on the order of 500B$-550B$ over ten years. By 2007, they had dropped that estimate by $136B, and this year it is revealed http://catalyst.phrma.org/new-congressional-budget-office-findings-show-medicare-part-d-continues-hold-line-costs/ “CBO is now projecting Part D is costing 43 percent below its original 2004 estimate.”, eg., 298 Billion Dollars. In addition, this number does not include the savings which accrue from using drugs instead of a surgical procedures in many instances.

Those who criticize Part D really need to do more homework. I continue to wonder whether it actually saves us money we would otherwise be putting into the other “Parts” of Medicare.

That Scarborough uses that particular successful program, instead of other big spending projects, to criticize the GOP is appalling.

Thanks for the info. I had not looked into it myself. I suppose it makes sense for a fake conservative to criticize a Bush initiative.

That does not offend me. I agree. It does not answer the question I put to you, collectively, though.

I don't answer your question because you "moderates" are unworthy of an answer. Now be a big boy and ignore me because I certainly have no intent of letting people forget what a bottom feeding scumbag Scott Brown really is.

Scott Brown presses Republicans to be ‘more inclusive’ on abortion

Brown blasts back: I am a pro-choice Republican

For all his faults, though, Scott Brown is:

a. A vote for organizing the Senate.

b. And a vote for repealing Obamacare.

Thus, several magnitudes better than the alternative, Princess Fauxcahontas.

Yeah don’t let a few abortions stand inn the way of winning.

That is a hateful thing to say...but I'll ignore it.

But do you really believe that we can make any legislative or judicial progress on the issue without first having a Republican President and a Republican Senate?

There is no such person elected to office in Mass. as a "conservative" Republican. Nevertheless, it has unfortunately been necessary for conservatives to depend on RINOs in order to get ANY legislation passed. Unfortunately, the GOP has historically not been able to reliably secure candidates in truly conservative states. They have not done so well in Michigan, either. If the conservatives in conservative states had proved more capable of pulling some votes in for legislation, we would not have to depend on the lousy NorthEast RINOs

For your info, here are some apropos ACU ratings:

Massachusetts 2011 2010 Years Lifetime
	Kerry 5.00 0.00 27 5.07
	BROWN 50.00 74.00 2 62.00

Michigan 2011 2010 Years Lifetime
	Levin 0.00 0.00 33 6.18
	Stabenow 0.00 0.00 11 7.64
At least the Massachusetts GOP has contributed somewhat to the conservative cause these last two years. Big boys understand such things. Whiners never will.

I repeat my question in a different way: How many Senate votes for strict constructionist judges likely to overturn abortion would likely come out of Michigan and how many from Massachusetts? I wager that MI (and NY) would yield zero, and MA one.

Wow - I thought you were accurate when you stated that Scarborough was a RINO when in Congress. That is so far off base I am shocked.

In responding to cripplecreek below, I looked up Sen.Brown’s ACU ratings and then when I re-read your comment, said “I wonder what Scarborough’s rating was?”. Turns out that he had an ACU rating of 95.5! That’s not a fluke, either: his ADA rating was 12.5.

I wonder what happened to him?
