Many protective mothers and fathers of Millennials aren't allowing their kids to play tackle football because of health risks. These attitudes could close the NFL’s pipeline to many talented players. But these concerns also have the potential to change the violent NFL culture for the better.
Professional football has been America’s favorite spectator sport since 1972 when baby boomers became the most important TV audience demographic. Steve Sabol, the genius behind NFL Films that helped to popularize the NFL in the 1960s, captured the drama and danger of pro football with his slow motion films of big violent hits backed by stirring music.
Pro football, depicted by Mr. Sabol as a confrontation between good and evil in which there can be only one winner, matched the values of baby boomers a half century ago. But this focus is not as appealing to the Millennial generation with its focus on win-win solutions and an instinct for avoiding confrontation.

youth sports bump for later.....
In our little city, there are fewer and fewer youth football teams. Our high schools have gone to year-round football. Track is now football. One of our high schools has 19 assistant coaches. Every coach wants to coach at the next level, so it’s win at any cost. Way too serious. The faculty don’t like athletics. The students ignore or dislike the players. Football is being destroyed at the grade school and college levels. At least here.
I remember being 11 years old in little league football and being coached on how to tackle as you described. The next season being having that changed to “Put a hat on them, Son!’.
That’s my personal crossing point that I can actually identify on this issue.
That’s true here in Northern VA, or that’s what my daughter told me when she was in high school.

Rush is a Steeler fan. So am I (I was from Los Angeles so I can root for anyone I want).
But some people do hate them. But not for being thugs. Just for being the Steelers (just like Yankees-haters, Lakers-haters, etc.).

Unsustainable? The NFL is probably the most profitable enterprise in the history of sports. They probably make more on sales of Madden NFL licensing than many other entire sports combined.
Filled with criminals? Like those paragons of virtue MLB and NBA? if you don’t want the criminal element, eliminate pro sports completely. You can keep hockey and soccer since they aren’t worth watching anyway.

Statistically, once you adjust for the extremely small population of football players to the almost universal number of people who either drive or ride in cars, you will find that football is still going to come out looking pretty dangerous.
Using your logic, shooting up heroin is relatively safe, as only around 150,000 overdoses show up in emergency rooms, compared to the 2.5m automobile related injuries that are treated in emergency rooms. Does that make heroin safer than driving? Of course not. The size of the populations are not comparable.
I’ve noticed a shift in youth sports to greater risk for students and families stuck with the bill. Cheerleading takes off points if you use a spotter for gymnastics that are ever more acrobatic. Football pushes kids to tackle and charge, even at young ages. A 14 year old ruins his knee, the parents pay thousands or tens of thousands of dollars for medical costs, the kid is partially handicapped, and it’s all considered “part of the game”. A cheer leader breaks a wrist, cracks a clavicle, it’s shrugged off as a risk of the sport, and there’s no help for parents.
Kids should not be pushed to do physical acts that adults would hesitate to do, with less assistance and preventative measures, with their parents stuck footing the medical bills and physical therapy costs.
Could be. $300m for the 2009-2013 license. That's not chump change.
So much as raise your voice to a child these days and their “parents” freak out. I rarely see children suffer punishment of any kind. This has been going on for several decades as I know see their offspring in business and they cry at the slightest unkind word. They are soooo needy that if you don’t praise them for going to the bathroom and not pissing on their hands they feel that no one loves them and sulk.

Always has. I played football at 12. Kids today can’t so much as play a game of chess without going into a “meltdown”.
I hope you are being sarcastic. Otherwise, you apparently prefer tall, flat-chested women.

My son played in high school several years ago when lacrosse was just really getting going here.
My takeaway: If I were Czar, and I mean real Czar and not some wimpy Obama czar, I would ban soccer, issue all the kids lacrosse gear, and make lacrosse the alternative Spring sport (to baseball).
Lacrosse has everything soccer does not. It has scoring, contact, and it requires opposable thumbs!
many studies have show that Soccer players(no protection) have more head injuries than football players(helmets) or boxers(padded gloves). “Headers”,banging heads together,kicks to head,etc.
I was raised in the 50’s & ‘60’s...our mama’s didn’t even know where WE were!
