WASHINGTON, Oct. 11 (UPI) -- Republican rival Mitt Romney picked up 3 points to lead U.S. President Obama 49 percent to 46 percent, a United Press International poll indicated Thursday.

Romney's lead, which was within the poll's 4.5 percentage-point margin of error, was based on a national survey taken by UPI-CVoter pollsters in the days following the first presidential debate.

It is the first time Romney has had the lead since the UPI poll began this election cycle.

While Romney's lead is 3 percentage points among likely voters, his net gain since the seven days immediately before the debate is 5 percentage points, UPI said. During a poll taken a Sept. 27-Oct 3, 48 percent of likely voters said they would vote for Obama and 46 percent said they would back Romney.

Just the latest in a string -- Reuters, FOX, IBD, Gallup, Pew, Monmouth... The only outlier (oddly or noise) is Rasmussen.

Romney will win...much to our delight, until it sinks in, Romney won.

But even the change in Rasmussen is well within the margin of error - meaning that it doesn’t necessarily not match up with these other polls.

It’s interesting...are the leftists that always pan Rasmussen as right wing propaganda now holding it up as the most credible poll?

Bob Beckle seems to think that every poll has Obama ahead and that he’s ahead by 9 in Ohio and will win the election with a 10 point deficiency in independents and enthusiasm. Could Bob be right?

No, what will sink in is that the Marxist Communist (and all of his minions) are gone! And a GREAT day it will be.

A good debate performance by Paul Ryan will hopefully cement that lead. But then again, the next Presidential debate is next week and Obama will come out swinging in that one. Romney had better be ready for the next debate because he’s gonna have EVERYTHING thrown at him by Obama.

I am encouraged by all of the movement in the polls, but something big needs to happen to get Romney’s numbers out of the MOE...

Perhaps tonights debate will help get this thing out of a tie.... my nerves would appreciate it. ;>)

I am pretty sure Romney will win, probably by 3-4.

The GOP took the state in historic fashion in 2010. The Dems were wiped out for their big spending ways, on the state and federal level (took both House seats and US Senate seat... and over 400 state house seats).

Since then, unemployment in the state is higher and gas prices are up. And we had a Dem governor - so there is no way to blame the GOP (although they are trying).

I recommend a Sam Adams. But just during the debate - don't make a habit of it. It's just for temporary jitters.

I always thought that if it stayed close, Romney would win by 4-5.

My fear (pre-debate) was that the polls would depress the conservative base. So having Romney up (even by 2-3 points) is huge, in my eyes.

With only 3 weeks to go, the media will be hard pressed to depress the base any more. It’s a huge concern now for the Obama team.

I officially voted for Mitt and Paul today. (Not that it matters, I live in the People’s Republic of kalifornia).

But all my down-ticket votes were for the GOP candidate as well as voting “No” on the two ‘raise your taxes” initiatives.

I’m sure there will be things we will be disappointed in if Romney is President. But I have a feeling that on the efficiency, management, business and even foreign policy side of the government, we’ll be pleasantly surprised.
