McDonald to drop out of Senate race (NY 43)

ALBANY, NY — Sen. Roy McDonald will announce Thursday that he will not push forward with a third-party campaign, two people familiar with this campaign said.

One source said McDonald, a two-term Republican incumbent who lost a GOP primary to Saratoga County Clerk Kathy Marchione, made his decision "for the good of the party." He has been largely silent since the Sept. 13 primary, as he weighed whether to push toward the November general election on the Independence Party line, which he secured over the summer.

While she always maintained her platform was broader, Marchione's challenge to McDonald was shaped in large part by his 2011 vote to legalize same-sex marriage. Marchione opposes same-sex marriage, and has criticized McDonald for his pugilistic explanation of his vote and suggested that he was motivated by the promise of campaign cash from well-heeled gay rights advocates, many of whom live outside of the four-county 43rd Senate District.

NY RINO who voted for same sex marriage loses his NY Senate seat. He raised something like $900,000 from the gay lobby after casting this crucial vote. That is a lot of dough for a state legislator race. Not enough I guess.

I have a silly question: What happens to all the money they raise if they drop out of the election?

Good for him. Not another Virgil Goode.

It seems that he spent most of it already on the primary.

Disclosure reports show McDonald’s campaign has so-far spent $647,404.60—a Bloombergian outlay of $96.73 per vote—and that doesn’t account for a final blitz of mail and television advertising

This seems about right because we were getting tons of glossy mailers everyday from McDonald. I don't watch much TV but it sounds like he spent a lot there too.

Marchione... suggested that he was motivated by the promise of campaign cash from well-heeled gay rights advocates, many of whom live outside of the four-county 43rd Senate District.

Go ahead and take their money. Just take it. Others are waiting in the wings when you go down the poo-poo chute route and fail.

Thank you. That makes sense. That’s a lot to pay for each vote, though.

I could never be a politician—I couldn’t keep up with all the games they have to play.

I couldn’t keep up with all the games they have to play.”

A member of our Republican Women’s Group ran for a local school board position, was one of three finalists after the primary and lost the run-off by one vote. First attempt at elected office. Spoke at our last meeting for almost two hours about the lack of information available to new people running for office until after they have completed a task - like ordering 500 signs which had two words out of order (turns out someone on the current board who was quietly supporting someone else had given her the incorrect information via email), how she learned the hard way to be wary of everyone asking any questions about her platform, etc.

Some of it was just unbelievable. Had she had a lot of money she could have hired someone to run her campaign for her but she is a mom with 5 kids and her husband lost his job right after she announced. I would suspect that she will run again but is certainly a lot wiser.

I got the glossy mailers, too. His one-track
campaign could only attack her raise and benefits;
couldn’t find anything else.

Well, I’ll leave the yard signs up and
probably drive to her office and leave
another check.

BTW, had no idea there other upstaters on FR.
Glad to meet you. :)

I think it takes a lot of guts and a certain personality type to even want to run for office.

I have neither of those—LOL!

Glad to meet you. We are few and far between but we make a few waves nontheless. NY Freeper ‘lowtaxsmallgov’ worked on Kathy Marchione’s campaign and helped make her victory possible.
