Watergate burglar G. Gordon Liddy, who left prison for a successful career as a conservative radio commentator, is retiring after 20 years and revealing two of the secrets that made him so famous so fast.
Liddy, who stopped broadcasting on Radio America July 27 and has since switched off his microphone for good, told Secrets that his radio career began over 20 years ago when he was asked to fill in for a vacationing talk show host in the New York area.
On the first day he arrived with a cold and his voice failed him. Down the hall, conservative host Rush Limbaugh had just finished broadcasting his national show and heard the "G-Man" struggling over the station's speakers. "He didn't know me from Adam but he came in, sat down and carried me for the rest of the program."
On the second day, media mogul Mel Karmazin was in his limo listening to competing radio stations in New York and was wowed by Liddy's blunt approach and told his Washington station, WJFK, to give the former Nixon aide an audition, which quickly led to a job and a long career on the radio.
When Liddy started at WJFK in 1992, he tried an unusual approach: He read news stories from the conservative press on air. "I just wanted to get the information out there. And it worked," he said in amazement.
Six weeks into retirement, politics still gets him going, especially President Obama.
"Obama is in my view a Muslim, not a Christian," he said, "and very hard left philosophically." His favorite political moment was George W. Bush winning both elections. "I still have his bumper sticker on my diesel pickup."
And on Wednesday night, he was feted by The Competitive Enterprise Institute and Shirley & Banister Public Affairs where he told stories from prison.
But at 82, Liddy said he was getting "long in the tooth" and he's eager spend time with his 12 grandchildren and one great grandchild. "It's been a good ride," said Liddy, "but I"m finished."
One memory of Mr Liddy that I’ll never forget. He, Ted Nugent and Charlton Heston were guests on Bill Maer’s Politically Incorrect. Bill and his liberal guest were over whelmed. They were taken to school. To see Mr Liddy and Mr Heston calmly dissect every comment and educate the two gun haters was something to see.
His delivery to me was more along the lines of Walter Winchell (which you may not get unless you are a radio historian or REEEEEEAL old).
I loved when he would explain to callers how he had so many guns as an ex-felon. “It’s true that due to my Watergate conviction I am barred by law. However....Mrs. Liddy has a very extensive firearms collection”. LOL!
Waaaaah . . . . no more “Stacked and Packed” calanders.
I used to see Liddy in his truck regularly on our way to work; inner loop of the Beltway between Braddock Road (where I got on) and Little River Turnpike (where he got off to head out to WJFK in Fairfax).
I used to wave at him whenever I had the chance. But I was also amused that someone with such a deep experience in intel work would follow a set schedule and route.
Ending an era. Liddy. The Patriot.
When I read earlier that he was retiring, I wondered what if any relationship he might have with Rush. Now I know “the rest of the story” (to quote another great!). Thanks for posting.
I remember Lìddy was the only one willing to follow thorough on the Vince Foster murder. Even Rush was afraid of the press.
For years I tried to get him on the radio and never found the station....but some of his stories from prison were a riot....(not caused a riot) when he would on rare occasion when he was on TV as a guest....
Hate to break it to you, but you were actually waving to one of his doubles.

Liddy was a great speaker and he had a great line that he'd use when some lib dufus would do something incredibly stupid. Liddy would say [deadpan]: “Oh, my.”

An interesting tidbit.
My son & I met him in ‘94. I told him my son likes the way he refers to the Clinton voters. He did a “Ye suckers” for my son.
Oh No! He was my Hero thru trying times. I bought his book and read it about 5 times over the years when I didn’t think I was going to make it thru some rough spots. His Motto “That Which Does Not Kill Me Makes Me Stronger”, became became mine as well. I made it thru and managed to work full time, raise and educate my children after their father left. Now, I’m old and retired but doing well. I’ve been thanking the Good Lord and Mr.G.Gordon Liddy for having given me the “WILL” to get this far in life.

Liddy was the first major step in me leaving liberalism and the Democratic Party.
I was living in Austin, TX. in the early 80's and the University was sponsoring a "debate" between Liddy and Timothy Leary.
I went there "hating" Liddy and ready to cheer Leary on. Seems they had met years ago when Liddy was a member of a raid on Leary's house in Poughkeepsie.
Long story short: Liddy was smarter, funnier, and made more sense than the hapless Leary.
I was so impressed I went out and bought a copy of "WILL" and finally started to understand conservative thought.
It also made me think, "if the media has so misrepresented Liddy...what else have they been lying about?"
Liddy told one of the funniest radio stories I’ve ever heard.
Early one morning he was manning a military gatehouse at a base when a young private came dragging in from a weekend of debauchery in a Mexican border town. Liddy told him he’d better not have sampled any of the local ladies as they were rife with gonorrhea.
The private’s face went white as a ghost and Liddy told him the only thing that would help was to smear Vaseline all over his Johnson and wrap it in toilet paper, keep it that way for 3 days.
The next morning the medical officer held a surprise drop- your-drawers inspection in the barracks to check the men for signs of VD and had a “what the H3ll moment” when he saw the toilet paper mess on the private’s member.
During the “debate” I was talking about, Liddy is telling a story of the raid at Leary’s.
It seems there was a young couple in one room, er, “coupling” and the young man was at the top of his stroke, prepared to deliver his coup de grâce when Liddy kicked opened the door with his weapon drawn and yelled, “Freeze!”
The young man, though severely conflicted, complied.
