Watergate's Liddy reveals guardian angel: Limbaugh (retires after 20 yrs on air)
Washington Examiner ^ | 9-20-12 | Paul Bedard

Posted on 09/21/2012 8:35:45 AM PDT by STARWISE

Watergate burglar G. Gordon Liddy, who left prison for a successful career as a conservative radio commentator, is retiring after 20 years and revealing two of the secrets that made him so famous so fast.

Liddy, who stopped broadcasting on Radio America July 27 and has since switched off his microphone for good, told Secrets that his radio career began over 20 years ago when he was asked to fill in for a vacationing talk show host in the New York area.

On the first day he arrived with a cold and his voice failed him. Down the hall, conservative host Rush Limbaugh had just finished broadcasting his national show and heard the "G-Man" struggling over the station's speakers. "He didn't know me from Adam but he came in, sat down and carried me for the rest of the program."

On the second day, media mogul Mel Karmazin was in his limo listening to competing radio stations in New York and was wowed by Liddy's blunt approach and told his Washington station, WJFK, to give the former Nixon aide an audition, which quickly led to a job and a long career on the radio.

When Liddy started at WJFK in 1992, he tried an unusual approach: He read news stories from the conservative press on air. "I just wanted to get the information out there. And it worked," he said in amazement.

Six weeks into retirement, politics still gets him going, especially President Obama.

"Obama is in my view a Muslim, not a Christian," he said, "and very hard left philosophically." His favorite political moment was George W. Bush winning both elections. "I still have his bumper sticker on my diesel pickup."

And on Wednesday night, he was feted by The Competitive Enterprise Institute and Shirley & Banister Public Affairs where he told stories from prison.

But at 82, Liddy said he was getting "long in the tooth" and he's eager spend time with his 12 grandchildren and one great grandchild. "It's been a good ride," said Liddy, "but I"m finished."

I spoke with the G-man on his show back after Tip O'Neil retired. We dicussed the Tipsters latest blustering about gun control.

Liddy called me a "good knock around kind of guy", which if you know Liddy was high praise indeed.

Loved listening to his show back in the early 90s when I was a young teen.

“It is I! G. Gordon!”

That still cracks me up for some reason.

I never thought G-man was that up in years. He had a great run. Hope he enjoys his time on the porch.

"He (Rush) didn't know me from Adam but he came in, sat down and carried me for the rest of the program."
He maybe didn't know you, but he knew who you were.

I used to listen to him in the 90's untill the local station dropped him.

He could read articles on air like no other...BUT, I lost a lot of respect for him when he said his best friend was Lanny Davis. He even had him on his show a few times.

I was unemployed for about six months back in late 1994. I spent every morning working on my resume and applying for various jobs while listening to the G-Man. I found the G more interesting than Limbaugh.

People who worked with Rush here in Pittsburgh early in his career say he was a terrific guy and was always willing to go out of his way to help anyone.

You can swing a government subsidized windmill and not hit another real competitor in the conservative market.

Conservative news and commentary is one of the most underserved segments of the market there is. Rush knows more is better, always.

There are endless ways of differentiating conservatism. The reverse is true of socialism. Socialism is all about someone else’s money, until such time as the money we are talking about is yours.

It’s the old Elie Weisel thing, right? “. . . and when they came for me, there was nobody left to speak.”

My great fear is that he’ll be dead within a year. Guys like that don’t retire.

The first time I ever heard the G man was on a Christmas trip to visit the in-laws in Ohio, doing a “best of” show where he was eviscerating Marion Barry live after saying you couldn't walk thru DC safely. He pointed out Barry had body guards because, like the G man, he was a convicted felon and couldn't carry a gun. Barry was apoplectic. Greatest bit of live on-location radio I ever heard.

Mr. Liddy is one of my idols. I loved listening to him, he was so informative and educating. He is a master of many subjects, never at a loss. He will be missed tremendously. He is definitely one of a kind. His book Will is great I recommend it to everyone. I read it for the first time years ago and every once in a while I’ll pick it up again. It’s just that good. God Bless You, Mr. Liddy. Thank you, for your service to this country.

The G-man is almost like Paul Harvey in terms of delivery and icon class persona.

He has been sharp, witty, direct and generally right. The story of him holding his hand over a candle at a dinner until the flesh burned is indicative of his “Will”. Whether he was on the right side or the wrong side he did what he said he would do and never cracked.

He did a good job and thought he had an obligation to do well on his show. His interviews were almost always interesting and well done. He allowed his guests to talk and make points.
