Republican primary voters in New York punished two incumbents last week who voted to legalize same-sex marriage, firing a potential warning shot nationwide toward GOP lawmakers who could soon face tough votes in their states.
Two of the four veteran — and long-secure — Republican senators in New York who voted for same-sex marriage a year ago await counts of absentee ballots as they sweat out the political fight of their lives. A third announced his retirement this year in the face of strong opposition to his gay marriage vote. A fourth won his primary Thursday but only after a fierce and nasty campaign that included homophobic images and phrases.
"Gay marriage is a very, very tricky issue, particularly for Republicans," said Lawrence Levy, executive dean of the National Center for Suburban Studies at Hofstra University. "The moderate, independent voters who tend to be swing voters in suburban communities tend to be tolerant, and supportive of gay marriage and other social issues."
He said New York's primary results will get close scrutiny nationwide. Republicans in battleground districts have a tricky path to walk: They must gain support from their base of conservatives who are opposed to gay marriage but not turn off the moderate voters who support gay marriage and who the candidate will need in a general election.
Levy said state legislators and dozens of candidates in congressional districts nationwide will be confronted with the same balancing act.

“Any Republican legislator faced with this vote is going to think twice,” said Robert Bellafiore, a political commentator and former top aide to Republican Gov. George Pataki of New York. “I don’t think there is any question this going to have a chilling effect across the country.”

Mant GOP "advisors" claim all independents are "moderate" but they are far from the truth, yet they persist in advising their candidates to lean left of center to hold onto that precious independent voter, presuming that voter to be "moderate."

From what I heard, the established Republicans voted for gay marriage in exchange for buckets of money toward their reelection... THE SCUM. I’m thrilled that the challengers did well even though they were vastly outspent by the progressive flood of money helping the traitors.
Other factors to watch are Gov. Cuomo’s dealmaking in redistricting to make sure the GOP kept majority in the State Senate, and the fact this was NY’s third primary. Extremely low turnout would have given the advantage to GOP primary voters who felt strongly about the issue.

The epidemic of degraded, de-procreative, disordered sex (not just gay sex but any antilife perversion) is a more certain road to the destruction of the nation than any other social, political, economic or military issue.
It's a multilevel thing, but just to state the most obvious aspect: sex shapes demography, and demography is destiny.
Could it be that voters want people who will actually represent their views? Stop caving to the minority, sheepdips!
Sidenote of interest: I saw the headline on this thread and thought for sure what I would read would be the exact opposite of the report's contents. I sighed upon discovering I was wrong; I am encouraged by the tiniest bit of progress we make toward returning to the moral country we used to be.

...but not turn off the moderate voters who support gay marriage...If "moderate voters" really favored gay marriage, they and the liberals could have passed it in at least one of the around 30 (I believe) states which have held votes on it.
