About 300 former cash grant recipients and community organizers blocked traffic briefly as they marched through downtown Harrisburg on Wednesday demanding restoration of the state’s general assistance program.

Four of the demonstrators were arrested for disorderly conduct when they sprawled across Second Street in front of the Governor’s Residence at the end of a “funeral” for the program, which was complete with mock

The cash grant program, which provided supplemental benefits of up to $200 per month to more than 60,000 poor people statewide, was ended this month as part of cost-cutting moves by the Legislature and Gov. Tom Corbett.

Corbett has said the state needs to stem the tide of rising welfare program costs. The elimination is to save $150 million.

About 300 were in attendance for the ACT Up rally, which aimed to restore a program that pays its recipients up to $200 a month to help cover basic needs.

Waheedah Shabazz-El, one of many Philadelphians bused to Harrisburg, likened the cuts to imposing a slow-motion death sentence on some simply for being poor.

Without it, she explained, some former recipients will have to do without critical medications or services. Others, they warned, might revert to selling drugs or other crimes to sustain themselves.

Spoken like a true criminal. No where does the article mention that Shabazz-El was busted and spent time in prison on a drug charge. I wonder how most American's, including a sizable portion of Rats, would react if they knew that a majority of community organizers never had a real job and often times are criminals.

Decades old, the general assistance program primarily served adults without children who do not qualify for other welfare programs.

That about says it all. This is a program for able-bodied adults without kids. God forbid they get a job to pay for those bus passes and $3.00 medical co-pays.

I guess I am hard hearted. I liked the ethos of if you are able to work, work or starve.

How could they get there to protest, having $200 less a month from other people’s pockets?

If they become criminals and are caught their housing and medical and food needs again are taken care of by taxpayers. These are people who just don’t want to live without surviving on other people’s money. Welfare recipient. Criminal. Convict. That is in essence the threat the guy just outlined will happen.

2 Thessalonians 3 - New American Standard Bible

10 For even when we were with you, we used to give you this order: if anyone is not willing to work, then he is not to eat, either.
11 For we hear that some among you are leading an undisciplined life, doing no work at all, but acting like busybodies

You got that right. If they only worked an average of 7 hours a week, not even a full day, they would EARN $200 per month.

My daughter, who is still in high school, is working two week nights per week plus weekends is making close to $175 per week, by working four six-hour shifts at a movie theater. She is taking multiple advanced placement courses, is the highest ranking cadet in JROTC at her school, and still has a social life. Now only if I could motivate her to clean her bedroom.

You wouldn't know that you have a teenager in the house if she cleaned her room.
