There are some mitigating factors at work.
When a novel communicable disease first begins, at first it is extremely virulent, even lethal. However, communicability and virulence work at cross purposes, with those strains of the disease that are less virulent winning out. This is a downward curve, and for HIV in the US, it is a steeper drop than the typical curve.
Eventually, the disease will turn from acute and lethal, to one which only becomes lethal late in life, or not at all, just a chronic condition.
At the same time, novel diseases also come in waves of infection, and they develop some resistance against the drugs used to treat them.
So there are ups and downs.
In Africa, virulence and communicability are still very high, for several reasons.

Well, my 50 year old gay brother just told me of his Aids diagnosis last week. His twin brother, gay and married to his homosexual partner, died from Aids 5 1/2 years ago.
So, the wages of sin, in my family, cost a life already, and soon, another one.

My family has paid and is paying a very high price for sexual cultural relativism. Really it makes me very sad and depressed. I hate losing 2 brothers to Aids.

I knew a lovely and beautiful woman whose husband’s little locker room and bath house side interests brought it home to her. She was utterly unaware that he was unfaithful, far less that she was his beard. She died before he did. I’ve often wished I could raise him from the dead, just to kill him again. I know that is wrong, but the thought is still there.

I lost two good friends in the late 80’s-early 90’s to the The Great Hemopheliac Genocide, that is politically-incorrect to talk about, because it was caused by gay-tainted blood.

Smokers are about 12-15% of the population while gays poll at 10-15%, depending on which day it is and if they are LGBT or whatever they choose to be....yes, I said CHOOSE. They pick their lifestyle. It's not inherent.
I choose to smoke because I'm used to it. My parents, friends, religious leaders and family did it. I emulate that behavior and enjoy it. I saw it on TV and movies. Smoking was cool....so I learned to smoke and enjoy it.
Same with being gay....(yes, I said that). It's a choice. Family, parents, friends, religious leaders, TV, movies and anyone who abuses a child influences the child and the choice. Ergo, it seems normal.
In a nutshell, smoking is just a choice. Sexual deviance is also a choice, but gays sure get more attention and acceptance than smokers and we don't harm children. Just doesn't seem right.

Where do you get the information that there are that many gays? I have read that they are only 1 - 2 % of the population.
