What a difference one TV interview can make. Embattled Democratic incumbent Claire McCaskill has now jumped to a 10-point lead over her Republican challenger, Congressman Todd Akin, in Missouris U.S. Senate race. Most Missouri Republicans want Akin to quit the race while most Missouri Democrats want him to stay.
The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Voters in the Show Me State finds McCaskill earning 48% support to Akins 38%. Nine percent (9%) like some other candidate in the race, and five percent (5%) are undecided.

Great news!! Thanks again Akin for your “principled” stand!
Wow... I am sooooooo shocked!! /s
oh yeah, he is principled alright, but mostly about keeping himself in power... he wont have to worry about that much longer...
Drop out, moron!
McCaskill has been the brains and the money behind the Akin campaign. She picked her target well and managed to hoodwink the GOP into nominating the only person in the entire state of Missouri whom she could possibly beat in November.
Faced with that unassailable fact, I am amazed at the number of people who continue to support this guy. He needs to go.
AKIN NEEDS TO GO NOW!
yes, he made a mistake and apologised...had he been a Dhimmicrat making that statement he would have been protected by the party and the MSM and you probably would never have seen the light of day
but it wasnt and it didnt.
the stupidity of his statement requires him to resign NOW....if he is that stupid about that issue, he is that stupid about other issues....he needs to go.
The good news is McCaskill is still not over 50%.
47% view Akin very unfavorable. Tough to overcome that one.
Give it a week for the outrage to die down, and for Akin to make his case and his apology tour. Then we’ll have a better picture of where it stands. McCaskill still has to defend ER record from now to November.

Unbelievable!
McCaskill took your money and your freedom Missouri - and you’re going to reward her with re-election?
If I were a liberal politician, I’d be wiping my ass with Mo voters too....
“The good news is McCaskill is still not over 50%.”
Don’t count on it. Many rats probably told the pollster that they are voting for Akin just to encourage him to stay in the race.
Little if any money to campaign and now confirmation that he can’t win. He is out within a week IMO.
She doesn't need to be if Akin stays in and Palin's call for a third party challenger comes to pass.
I’m annoyed, however, by the stupidity and vapidity of voters who can’t see for themselves what a stupid comment this was, and, how in he grand scheme of things ...this means not a WHIT.
Our economy is about to go over a cliff, and here we sit around wringing hands over a silly comment about rape and abortion ... do not people realize that if our government completely goes bankrupt, that if we begin to suffer double digit unemployment numbers ....there will be NO police to prevent the majority of rapists from committing their crimes?? Do they not realize a society in chaos will ultimately result in a loss of rights for everyone, PARTICULARLY poorer women and children??
People are seriously so sheeply and stupid ... I’m just not sure how long this republic is really going to last. with McCatfish in, this process will surely be played out all that much faster.
He’s toast. It’s over

He put himself above everything there is no way I would ever ever vote for him.
Well Loser here is your Poll
And that is exactly the rationale Akin will use to continue this failed crusade. A few days ago, he was citing the PPP poll that (while sampling R+9), showed him a point ahead. Now he's going to say... "See?.. I'm weathering the storm. I must stay in because God wants me here for the people of Missouri."
Turned on the tv this morning, and zipped by CNN for a few seconds on the way to the Weather Channel and an Isaac update. The big heading/discussion: “Ryan and Rape.”
Not feeling too charitably towards Akin right now.
“Give it a week for the outrage to die down”
Not gonna happen. McCaskill will replay the interview non stop and Akin will sink even further.
Many voters are not paying attention yet and probably missed the scandal.
I agree in the grand scheme it means little,
but your ire should be directed at the selfish little jerk who put himself and his pride over every other thing...
He’s acting like an ENTITLED democrat
He really is a jerk for not dropping out.
R self-flagellation likely accounts for much of the 10% deficit.
“...this means not a WHIT.”
Yep, it affects his actions as a senator not at all.
He would vot for a judge or justice that would not write an abortion ‘right’ into the Constitution and that’s it.
So would any good senator.
But the Dems “sell the sizzle, not the steak” like the media.
And the dumb sluts buy it...
Apologies never work.
Jerk? Normal for most US Senators.
He is polling a little higher than I expected, but I think that is probably the ceiling of support he will get in the race. He needs to dropout.
Honestly, no, most people do not know or realize any of that—I’d say about 35% do. People think if the scenario you outlined were true, they would hear about it on the evening news. You can blame it on the lying, state run media.
As a final post I said that regardless if Akin stays in or is replaced, at this point with the attitude of his supposed supporters, the seat will remain with Caskill.
So, Missouri voters, enjoy.
Told ya.
I can just see it now from them, "Why take a gamble in swing states with pro-life candidates, when we can have a 'sure win' without them...". This isn't just about this race, but the stake of future races for the party. Pro-life groups should think long and hard about continuing to support Akin- there are many, other solid candidates in MO who won't cause this outcome, or lose this current race.
This is proof that the man should have quit... I will put money into any challenge that Sarah Palin is involved with.
LLS
and there you have it...McCaskill’s money spent supporting Akin during the primary seems to have paid off well
except it is a national story and a drum that the dims are pounding in unison.
“Give it a week for the outrage to die down”
I’m inclined to agree. And if Akin does somehow survive this and gets elected, he will be beholden to no one - especially the republican party.
He can walk into the senate chambers with one of those “We’re #1” outsized football gloves except it won’t be the index finger that is raised up high.
He will be the most independent senator in Congress. And Rush is wrong about needing 51 republican senators. We only need 50 if Ryan becomes VP and becomes the deciding vote in the senate.
I don’t know about any of these polls. By any company.
Rasmussen is clearly a company that leans right with t’s poling which means Rasmussen himself would probably like to see Akin out of the race so he the right wing polling company comes up with a poll that has him down 10, but the PPP aka liberal polling company has Akin up.
See my point?
I just wonder if all these people make things up and pulls numbers out of thin air and no one should pay attention to them at all.
I am stunned he’s only down 10 points, I thought he would be down 30 points by now, hey nothing better than moral victories, just ask the Clippers
Dittoes!
You will see the ads starring Akin when the RNC convention starts. Then it will be all Akin all the time.
Go to his web site and send him a message to drop out!
Exactly. Ann Coulter is right: Todd Akin IS a "Selfish Swine".
A conservative Republican - who would vote to repeal ObamaCare - had this seat won. We had full confidence that we'd be rid of moonbat Claire McCaskill... possibly forever. Then Akin shows up - completely unprepared - for a TV interview, and utters his bizarre statements about "how the female body works".
But the important thing here is that Akin "stuck to his principles" and refused to step down. Yeah, that's it... "principles" are what's important here.
*barf*
Your support for Obama Claire is starting to become very obvious, you need to tone it down a bit. Anyone who is defending Akin this strongly after what we’ve seen and after these poll results, has highly questionable motives IMO.
“People are seriously so sheeply and stupid “
That’s why Akin’s comment is a stroke of genius.
He has just sewed up the STUPID vote.
Instead of apologizing he should have insisted his remark has some validity. And say it over and over and over again till the idiots believe it. Shouldn’t take too much repetition.
He could quote Planned Parenthood from the 1980’s.
Win over the stupid with more stupidity.
And how about Mona Charen’s article and the role of stress in pregnancy?
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2921945/posts
Hey, I’m just enjoying being contrarian, but the way for Akin to fight back is not to be sheepish, but rather say he learned it all from Planned Parenthood.
We don’t have to surrender stupidhood to just the idiots on the left.
How ironic. This arrogant ass believes he is the only one who can carry the pro-life torch. In reality, he is going to be responsible for the pro-abort remaining in office. Any number of other pro-life candidates can beat McCasKILL. He is the only one who certainly cannot. And he believes he is helping the pro-life cause? He is delusional and anyone who is buying it is delusional. Unfortunately, some FReepers are still buying it.
None of those who lost in the primary is allowed to mount a write-in campaign. They can, however, be named by the Republican Central Committee if Akin withdraws with court order by Sept. 25.
Akin has a real opportunity to not be forever remembered as the Benedict Arnold of the pro-life movement. Make a deal with the Central Committee to withdraw if he can name his replacement. If it is a strong pro-life candidate with a chance to win, both sides should make that deal.
This fool probably cost us the Senate. No win that is thrown away can come to a good in the entire end. Now if we lose the senate and get the WH then we cannot get rid of Obamacare. Thanks idiot Akin for your MOUTH!
Akin is starting to look like a bum. Get the HELL out now!
