In checking this study out--The "study" was a statistical sampling study, not a scientific one, and was done in 1972, or 40 years ago. It has no validity whatsoever in supporting a blanket statement about women having special defenses against pregancy due to a rape, due to the lack of any repeat studies to verify and how out of date the study is. Thus to most people, especially younger people, it is in the realm of "fantasy" to hear such claims.

Just as an aside... you used the word "legit", short for legitimate, which was another part of this debacle. Even if it has a meaning of "legally established or accepted" it has a common usage meaning of being "OK" or "on the up and up". And this wordplay will form the basis of relentless soundbiting of this killer word use. In the case of the medical study you cite... it has never proven to be "legit", as in used in court or a legally precedent setting basis.

The proper response is, “None of us will agree 100% on everything. That is why there are many congressmen and senators to debate a consensus. My personal view is that Mr. Akin is wrong, but that the important thing is that we get on to a recovery from our current economic failure.”

As for the “raped women can’t get pregnant” stuff, up to 20 years ago, this was accepted to the point of being taught in some hospitals. Dr. Wilke was(is) a respected source on the right to life argument and he believed the same and taught the same.

Our congressmen have to make decisions on lots of things. Hopefully they are as up to date as possible on all things, but that is not possible on all things.
