4 cops shot, 2 dead, in St. John [Parish] shooting [Valero Refinery]

Two St. John [sheriff] deputies and two civilians were reportedly shot in LaPlace at about 5:00 a.m.

UPDATE: WWL-TV reports that two officers are dead and two others were shot in the incident.

The incident occurred near Bayou Steel on Highway 3217 in a Valero plant parking lot. That highway remains closed at this time. The parking lot is located in St. John Parish, while the Valero plant itself is located in St. Charles Parish.

There is no word yet on the conditions of the officers or the other two people shot in the incident.

A witness on the scene called WWL Radio News and said that he heard "seven or eight shots" when it happened.

The witness said it appeared a police vehicle had been shot multiple times.

Police officers from several parishes are involved in the hunt for the gunman, including State Police, and deputies from Charles Parish, St. John Parish, and Jefferson Parish.

One deputy was air-lifted to the hospital, according to a witness.

WWL-TV reports that it appears that workers are being evacuated from the plant.

Kinda the middle of “Freaking NoWhere” LA, west of NO proper.

3217 is a spur road that connects Airline highway to the River Rd.

LOTS of (potential) intrigue here.

It is a shuttle parking lot for a refinery. I looked at GoogleMaps, and I did not see where the refinery was.

After Katrina, I proposed to one oil company to put a 60 foot to 90 foot dirt wall around the refinery to protect against terrorism and storm surge.

It would also contain any explosion within the dirt wall.

The one refinery fire in California was due to a vapor cloud coming contact with a spark from an engine that was idling (fire truck, of all things).

That was the Chevron-Richmond fire. I had not heard of a second refinery fire in California/West Coast.

I could find that shuttle parking lot, but the property next door was a pipe storage facility.

Refineries are normally located on or very near the Mississippi River. Could not find this Valero Plant.

It sounded like they evacuated the refinery.

This attack at a refinery.

Not sure a refinery is the target. This occurred in a parking facility where workers park and shuttle service is used to get them to mulitple work facilities in the area.

snip
The shooting occurred around 5:30 a.m. in a parking lot used by workers in an area of manufacturing plants and refineries along the Mississippi River........

Somebody might be facing heavy Federal charges when this is over if the parking lot/property is marked with signs of a certain kind.

Almost all such parking lots already have no guns/no drugs signs.

The exhaust (from the valves of the engine) would be a fire of sorts.

A diesel has combustion from compression not from spark, but it still has combustion.

And a cloud, from what I understood of the explanation, would have enveloped the whole vehicle (my understanding).

I need to find the article that I read that from...

Right now, heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the slain officers, and prayers for those officers who are injured.

We will have the facts in time, but for now, these officers and their families deserve our prayers.

This article claims that diesel engines were the source for other refinery fires:

Probe of Richmond refinery fire looking at spark sources

From that article:

The investigator said diesel-powered trucks and generators have been ignition sources at other large refinery fires, including at BP's Texas refinery explosion that killed 15 workers and injured dozens more.

Depends how credible this source is...
