Day went reasonably well, thanks. I had an appointment with the Sleep Dr. at 8 this morning to go over the results of last week's sleep study. We're changing the CPAP apparatus I'm using - should sleep better with the new equipment.

Work was uneventful - I'll be going in for 4 or 5 hours tomorrow - the Katzenjammer Kids are still running amok. :)

Among the piano works of Frederic Chopin from 1829 are a few fine, short pieces that were not published until after his death.

Chopin: Mazurka in C, Op. 68/1

Chopin: Mazurka in F, Op. 68/3

This little gem will break your heart.

Chopin: Waltz in B minor, Op. 69/2

This waltz is a little beauty.

Chopin: Waltz in D-flat, Op. 70/3

This is another polonaise that Fred decided to suppress. It’s not in the same class as the polonaises he was to publish later, but it’s still a worthy effort.

Chopin: Polonaise in G-flat

Niccolo Paganini was barnstorming through Europe in those days, and Fred saw him play in Warsaw. From this came a set of variations on an Italian tune that Fred decided not to publish, but it’s a wonderful effort.

Chopin: Variations in A on “The Carnival of Venice” (“Souvenir of Paganini”)

FREEDOM ISN’T FREE!

It Is Purchased With The Blood Of Patriots!

“Freedom Isn’t Free”

By DDR Kelly Strong USCG (ret)

I watched the flag pass by one day,
It fluttered in the breeze.
A young Marine saluted it,
And then he stood at ease.
I looked at him in uniform
So young, so tall, so proud,
With hair cut square and eyes alert
He’d stand out in any crowd.

I thought how many men like him
Had fallen through the years.
How many died on foreign soil
How many mothers’ tears?
How many pilots’ planes shot down?
How many died at sea
How many foxholes were soldiers’ graves?
No, freedom isn’t free.

Taps

I heard the sound of Taps one night,
When everything was still,
I listened to the bugler play
And felt a sudden chill.
I wondered just how many times
That Taps had meant “Amen,”
When a flag had covered a coffin.
Of a brother or a friend.

I thought of all the children,
Of the mothers and the wives,
Of fathers, sons and husbands
With interrupted lives,
I thought about a graveyard
At the bottom of the sea
Of unmarked graves in Arlington,
No, freedom isn’t free.

There has always been a bit of confusion about the two piano concertos of Frederic Chopin. The Piano Concerto #2 was written first, and the Piano Concerto #1 was written a year later. The premiere of the Piano Concerto #2 was a red letter day for Fred. It was 29 December 1829, and the 19 year old Chopin performed at the Warsaw Merchants’ Club, giving the world his first truly mature masterpiece and an evergreen for the concert hall.

His orchestral accompaniment is rather clunky, so it’s a weak start. Sonata format has the orchestra first play both subjects of the exposition while the pianist sits and waits for his entrance. The exposition repeat is handled by piano and orchestra. Then comes development and recapitulation, followed by a coda.

The pianist is Arthur Rubinstein, who was 88 years old at time of this concert and almost blind. What phrasing! This performance uses the short ending.

Chopin: Piano Concerto #2 in F minor, Op. 21 (first movement)

The second movement is a dreamy slow movement in ternary (A-B-A) format where the piano becomes an opera singer.

(second movement)

The finale is a mazurka of sorts. The coda is a technical challenge, requiring a supple right wrist, something I did not possess as a teenager. At 9:09 the horn sounds, and it’s off to the races!

(third movement)

In 1830, Frederic Chopin turned 20, and now the majority of his works found their way to the publisher. There are fewer and fewer pieces that fail the test. Among the gems of this year are a collection of four mazurkas.

Chopin: Mazurka in F# minor, Op. 6/1

Chopin: Mazurka in C# minor, Op. 6/2

Chopin: Mazurka in E, Op. 6/3

Chopin: Mazurka in E-flat minor, Op. 6/4

This nocturne didn’t make the grade but was published long after Fred’s death. This doesn’t mean that it’s a bad piece. It has a wintery feel.

Chopin: Nocturne in C# minor

A waltz also belong to this category, and it has become a favorite over the past century and a half.

Chopin: Waltz in E minor
