The Prideful, Arrogant CEO of Chick-fil-A (Dan Cathy same as 1960's segregationist, or something)
Slate ^ | August 6, 2012 | Jesse Bering

For several tense weeks, our nation has been broiling unpleasantly in the cultural equivalent of polyunsaturated fat. And despite any profits or political points made during this Chick-fil-A debacle, I think we’ve all gotten a bit burned. As everyone now knows, this entire ordeal—from the Mike Huckabee-orchestrated “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day,” to the “Same-Sex Kiss Day” that came after, the talking heads, the relentless stream of articles and opinion pieces on the controversy, the thousands upon thousands of online comments, the vitriolic tweets, impulsive Facebook statuses, and equally tart replies, the strained friendships, heated arguments with family members, all of it—began when Chick-fil-A’s CEO, Dan Cathy, said in an interview with the Baptist Press that the company was “guilty as charged” when it came to endorsing the biblical view of traditional marriage. Several days later, on the Ken Coleman show, Cathy clarified that when it comes to legalizing same-sex marriage, “I think we are inviting God’s judgment on our nation when we shake our fist at Him and say ‘we know better than you as to what constitutes a marriage’ and I pray God’s mercy on our generation that has such a prideful, arrogant attitude to think that we have the audacity to define what marriage is about.”

When I first read about this story, it was actually mildly amusing to me. At least, it was amusing in the same way that the Crouches, that dazzlingly peculiar televangelist couple on TBN, unexpectedly paralyze my index finger while channel surfing. You may know the Crouches: She with Pomeranian on her lap, a towering pink wig on her skull, and tarantula lashes affixed to her face; he, slim, mustachioed, in a white suit, capped by a bounty of salt-and-pepper hair; both perched atop gilded thrones and cackling about sweet Baby Jesus...

God may seem real, but he is almost certainly all in our heads—a complex cognitive illusion melded by mindless evolutionary forces. At the very least, the chances of there being a God disproportionately focused on the sexual behaviors of one particular creature, a depilated primate, out of the billions of distinct species that have ever walked, flown, crawled, slithered or hopped upon his earth, is so minuscule that the idea requires a prodigious degree of egocentrism to entertain...

I know that Paul said, "...to be absent from flesh is to be in the presence of the Lord.", but at what point do people like Jesse Bering realize that they've made a horrible, horrible mistake...?

America has no need for the new order of “Homosocialism”.

Everyone at SLATE is GAY, I think.

Pretty much. That, or heterodhimmi. They tolerate hets, since hets breed brats that gays can skin in a restroom someplace to make more gays. Not much use for them otherwise, but they don't ritually kill them. Yet.

Put this in your bong and smoke it, Tinkerbell: Dan Cathy has an opinion on homo marriage.

Actually, the author's real problem is with Genesis 20, which does have an opinion about homosexuality, one from which you can still feel the heat rising 3000 years later.

Since Slate offends me I demand they be shut down.

Chill, brother, and just wait for the Norks or the Chinese to do it for you. Hope you live at least 200 miles away.

Black Knight: "Alright. We'll call it a draw!"

3fingas, i think your words are words to live by. LIVE AND LET LIVE. and also, your principle of ‘not forcing your lifestyles on everyone else’ is a good way of rephrasing this.

here’s the thing: dan cathy donates MILLIONS of dollars to organizations that do just that: they work actively to FORCE THEIR LIFESTYLES on gays and lesbians. it’s fundamentally unamerican. not just forcing their lifestyles: they work in some cases to support, literally, EXTERMINATING gays and lesbians. see, for example,
http://thenewcivilrightsmovement.com/chick-fil-a-profits-are-supporting-ugandas-kill-the-gays-bill/politics/2012/08/01/45430
that’s not just unamerican: it’s inhuman.

think about how this great nation was founded: the pilgrims were facing similar oppression in england, and had to sail across an ocean to get away from that kind of persecution. that was 1620; by 2012 we should surely have internalized the lessons of LIBERTY to where we can let other people have the same rights we do. including marrying the people they love. including — not getting exterminated.

it’s just the right thing to do. as you said: LIVE AND LET LIVE. your principles have, actually, helped me understand why so many gays and lesbians are upset over dan cathy’s very public pronouncement about his beliefs, and — more urgently — about his political activism against their physical and emotional welfare.

I see you have just recently created your account and I suppose you probably won’t be around here very long.
Anyhow, don’t take my post out of content and pretend that I agree with you. I don’t. Marriage is defined as a union between and a man and woman. This social institution is biologically natural and ultimately the foundation upon which everything else is built. Same sex coupling is both unnatural and, in my opinion, unhealthy for the persons involved and for society at large. Your smear of Chick-Fil-A is gratuitous and dishonest. Chick-Fil-A is business founded on Christian principles. You and other homosexual activists are threatened by that. If you don’t like the values that Dan Cathy supports, don’t patronize that business. Stop spreading lies and stop trying to impose your beliefs on us.
