The finale was a formality, more a coronation than a contest. Michael Phelps headed into the retirement the only way imaginable: with another gold medal.

KEEPING TRACK? Luckily for you, we are. Updated medal count. Reclaiming the lead with his trademark butterfly stroke, the one most people first saw in Sydney a dozen years ago, Phelps won the 18th gold of a mind-boggling career in the 4x100-meter medley relay Saturday

That might be the highlight of the games so far, I never have been so transfixed on 10,000 meter race before like that.

Every medal counts, it’s neck-and-neck with the ChiComs for the overall lead.

I notice though that China seems to win all their medals in “Nerd” sports.

I don’t think swimming is a gay sport.

They win them in “subjective” sports with judges opinions decide. Judges that can be paid off. They had more metals last time. So interesting that they won so many metals when they were on their own turf.

I admit that I haven't been watching, but we're talking about synchronized anything here, aren't we.

BTW, wasn't Michel Phelps the swimmer who got caught smoking pot? If he was, it doesn't seem to have affected his athletic ability.

Moe is a Brit and the favorite. The story of this race (for us Americans) was the incredible performance of Galen Rupp. This is the first time an American has won a medal in the 10,000 meters since Billy Mills in 1964--48 years ago. A truly historic achievement given the dominance of the Kenyans and Ethiopians in this race.

Great job Galen. Both you and NBC missed what may turn out to be one of the biggest stories of the Olympics.

Well, I’ve only got one thing to say to Mister Phelps.

You didn’t win those medals. Someone else made that happen.

I’m beginning to wonder if Michael Phelps is half-man/half fish. I’m proud of what he has accomplished - even if he didn’t win those medals by himself/sarc.

” I admit that I haven’t been watching, but we’re talking about synchronized anything here, aren’t we. “

They won gold in both synchro diving events. They also cleaned up in table tennis, badminton, and trampoline. I’m sure if the Olympics introduced foosball the Chinese would take home gold.

He is rather impressive to say the least. I mean, Obama that is, seeing as he is the one who actually won those medals.

Phelps is just a worker.

I see that the Williams sisters are competing.
How can a professional player compete?
