Thousands Celebrate Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day [ABC news coverage]
ABC News ^ | Aug 1 2012 | Amy Bingham

People across the country are flocking to Chick-fil-A today, not because of the fast-food chain's chicken sandwiches, but because of its CEO's vocal support of traditional marriage.

Nearly 600,000 supporters signed up to celebrate Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day today, which former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee created to counter a boycott launched by gay marriage activists last week after Chick-fil-A CEO Dan Cathy said he was "guilty as charged" for not supporting gay marriage...

Courtney Clem, 22, strolled over to the Chick-fil-A in Crystal City, Va., to pick up lunch for her entire office and show her support. Clem said she wanted to eat at Chick-fil-A today not only because she supports traditional marriage but because she supports the First Amendment.

"We want to support their right to an opinion," Clem said. "I do support that opinion. And the right. Even if it was an opinion I disagreed with, I'd be here today. "

...

Gay rights groups launched a national boycott of the chicken chain last week, which the mayors of Chicago, San Francisco, Boston and Washington, D.C., have publically supported.

The Philadelphia City Council is considering a resolution to condemn the company for what councilman Jim Kenney called their "Anti-American attitude."

D.C. councilman Marion Barry tweeted that he does not support "hate chicken," Boston's Mayor Thomas Menino said there is "no place for your company" in his city and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said the restaurant's "values are not Chicago values."

The Chicago Republican Party is making a formal complaint against Emanuel today, alleging that the mayor has "broken civil rights laws pertaining to religious freedom and the First Amendment in denying Chick-fil-A a permit...

National conservative figures have responded to the controversy with an outpouring of support for the restaurant.

Yep, a stark contrast...vast numbers of normal looking people vs. a few gay guys kissing.

It’ll be interesting to see just how many of them show up.

It was jam-packed during the Appreciation Day lunchtime at the Chick-fil-A in the sane Northwest section of the People's Socialist Republic of Austin. Chick-fil-A must have brought in a lot more help; the staff was swarming around like fire ants on a freshly kicked mound.

But everyone was having a good ol' time waiting in line, polite and all, talkin' to each other about how great Texas weather is... and about the Cruz victory and the like.

The spicy chicken sandwich was delicious.

So excited to hear this! I ate there on Monday, and spoke with the manager briefly. I told him I will keep coming back just to show my support for the 1st Amendment (and marriage). We will try to get in for dinner tonight!

I AM HUNGRY! Couldn’t even get close to CFA in Macedonia Ohio! Drive thru line was a 1/4 mile long, stretching way down the street. The parking lots at an adjacent big box were packed. Lines to get in the door went around, and around and around! Didn’t have that much time, so will try again later!

Just got back. Line was out the doors, and the drive-through line was around the building and out of the parking lot. I had to park in another parking lot and walk a few hundred yards to get there. It was like a mall parking lot before Christmas.

The homo-boycott not only backfired, it was NUKED!

I was thinking too that you only see these kinds of crowds at Christmas shopping.

Yes, it was nuked. They never saw the frontal attack coming.

careful. Much of the support from those stores comes from the store owners. Not the corporation behind the name.

That is alright. If even 1/1000 of us show up Friday as we did today we’ll outnumber them 10 to 1.

I will be there Friday night, however I am leaving my kids at home.

(if there is an actual kiss in, my kids don’t need to see that crap)

Today is a huge day for many reasons. This is a legitimate groundswell of real American support for traditional, Christian values and conservative principles. It is in no way “astroturfed” like most of the “aggreived protests” of the left. It is the average American showing the disgust he or she feels with the homosexual agenda pushed by the left in media, academia and government. It is nothing less than a wholesale rejection of all that the left stands for.

0bama, the democrat politicians, and their propaganda organs in the media must be crapping their pants. And in truth, I don’t think they can even grasp what they are seeing.

This is a harbinger of November. The American people are NOT HAPPY with the direction of the country, and they want to take it back. It is going to be a landslide, and the democrats are going to be swept out of power. Oh, they won’t go completely away, like the Sith Lords. But the wilderness awaits them.

I dropped $25. It was hard to get into the parking lot.
