Soccer: Cold War edge as U.S. women beat North Korea

(Reuters) - The U.S. women's soccer team beat North Korea 1-0 on Tuesday in a politically charged Olympic clash between the isolated Asian country and the global superpower it has loathed since they fought a Cold War conflict six decades ago.

A mixture of curious Britons and enthusiastic Americans piled into the stands at Old Trafford, home of English Premier League club Manchester United, to watch the contest, with no North Korean spectators in evidence.

Apparently the good citizens of the workers paradise of North Korea didn’t want to go slumming in the decadent cesspool of capitalist exploitation, leaving their athletes to suffer the indignity of having to suffer through the degradation of exposure to that western decadence all by themselves.

Or something like that.

The NorKs team is banned from other international competitions for a while because of doping

I guess those women will meet with a tragic accident when they get home.

Probably some of them will defect.

I wonder how badly Kim Jong un will have these poor women beaten and raped for losing to the evil Americans.

You must realize the judging from history, these women will be punished severely for losing like that (to the USA no less!). Hopefully some of them will defect.

Their extended famies could be sent to the camps for this!

I pity the team’s coach and players as at the least they will be subjected to “self criticism” sessions or worse sent to a gulag. When North Korea lost in the World Cup I seem to remember the coach was sent for “reeducation”.

Running on a combination of Andro and tree bark, and still we can only edge them 1-0

I realize these women will be headed back to hell if they return to North Korea. But they have probably received favorable food, clothing & housing as part of their training regimen, well over and above what the average citizen received. What happens to them for losing means they will no longer live better than everyone else in that hellhole, it means they will now be living slightly worse. It doesn’t make it right; none of what the Norks do to their own people is right. That’s why it’s so ridiculous that none of their own “fans” got to attend the match. They can’t allow them out of the prison. No sane person would return.

Some day, maybe the psychotic and perverted Kim dynasty will come to an end, and the North Korean people will be freed from their nightmare.

Did you read the part about one David Greenhough, described as a pensioner, who turned up to support them carrying his own Nork flag because he’s “an independent Marxist historian”?

I guess he won’t mourn when these poor women disappear. I hope they all defect.

If they defect their entire extended families will be in danger from being sent to the camps.

Besides these women aren’t the only ones doped up...

It seems to me that all of North Korea is just one big “camp.” Some are slightly worse than most.

true but their internal prison camps are death camps. If you are caught doing something like reading “South Korean Propaganda” flyers dropped from a balloon, you could be executed while your extended family is forced to watch. Then they, children and all, will be sent to the camps and slowly starved and worked to death.

There was a defector who reported seeing a 10 year old executed for picking up (”stealing”) 3 grains of rice from the floor and eating them. There is only one punishment for any trangression. Beating and rape aren’t “punishment” they are just facts of life in these camps.

“a Cold War conflict six decades ago”

The Korean was anything but a “Cold War”. Reuters reporters need to be forced to watch every episode of M*A*S*H*.

The real cold war that’s heating up is between Brandi Chastain and Hope Solo of the Women’s team. They have a real media cat fight going on there.

I saw a documentary (surprisingly good job by Lisa Ling) on NK. For any transgression, the Norks typically punish three generations by sending them to the death camps.

Any defectors would like be sending their parents, brothers and sisters with their spouses and nieces and nephews to life sentences in the camps.

Yes, I think I saw that too but I barely remember it. Probably not as hard hitting as I would have liked though.

She really just reported what she and her crew were able to document, including first person accounts of the horrors.

She implied that things were even worse than she was reporting, but commendably only reported what she could confirm.

The punishment the North Koreans will receive was probably not lost on the American team.

Sure would temper the thrill of the win knowing that someone on the other side might even die for losing.
