Seems to me there may be some parole consideration due, depending of course on the nature of their offenses. But definitely some privilege extension.
Its not so surprising. There are good guards and bad guards.
In my misspent youth I was in a jail annex dormitory when a guard had an asthma attack. In that situation he was locked in with us and the rest of the jail was locked out. (His keys would only take him so far and the rest of the jail was the same way.)
One of the inmates radioed for help and another took the keys and let the other guards in.
Good for the people that stopped the crime, regardless of where it happened.
