One of her big deals was putting down her husband. Some of the other comedians used to make jokes about their spouse, but it was generally tongue in cheek. I remember thinking hers was more bitter. I still thought her schtick was funny.
If I saw it again today, I might see it differently. You do raise a valid point, something I probably didn’t tune into at the time.
My favorite was Rodney Dangerfield. Shecky Green had a similar vent if I remember accurately. It was all about self-deprecation. Generally, I think most people can identify with that on some level.
Dangerfield once remarked that he was very ugly as teenager. How ugly? “I had acne so bad that one time I fell asleep in the library for the blind, and woke up with six kids trying to read my face.”
Another Dangerfeild quip: “So I get into an arguement with my kid, I tell him, ‘just wait one day you’re gonna have kids of your own’ He says to me, sure pop, so will you” No respect, no respect at all I tell ya..
One thing I notice about female comedians: it's rare to find one who does self-deprecation. They generally prefer to make fun of others.
