In a news release from the Department of Defense yesterday it was learned that the San Gottardo Signal Site near Vicenza, Italy, will soon be returned to its host country of Italy.
Thousands of U.S. servicemen and their families have called picturesque Vicenza home during an overseas deployment.
Since 2005, under the Base Realignment and Closure Commissions transformation agenda, several bases across the nation and in Europe have been consolidated or phased out in an attempt to reduce redundancy and cut defense spending.
Europe, in particular, is not only mourning the loss of revenue and commerce from the U.S. military bases but on an emotional level many citizens have already stated that they will miss the security of having a U.S. military base as protection.
The Pentagons news release did not give the exact closure date for the base.
Mentioned in the same report was the closingof, and return to Germany, eight buildings in the Crestview Housing Area in Wiesbaden. Both the Italian and German facilities were deemed as excess to the needs of the U.S. military in Europe.
Readers with concerns regarding these closures can contact U.S. Army Europe Public Affairs, 011-49-6221-57-8628.

I understand the need to cut spending but why with one of our allies? Of course, I would like to think that Italy’s brief honoring of the slain Israeli athletes this last weekend certainly wouldn’t have put that country at the top of the list for closing.
I would much rather see us get out of Afghanistan than out of Italy.
Romney and the GOP would get 5 million “concerned conservaties” votes if they created a system like this for the ENTIRE federal government. Get some of the new businessmen elected in 2010 to head groups to clean out old laws and reduce the stupid things taht live forever , like taxes to pay for WWII or the Spanish American war tax on land lines. GIVE US A BREAK. “Stop it” “stop the spending, all tax system old regualtions.”
We are not getting out of Italy; the US Army and Congress are dumping a ton of money into Vicenza. The only thing closing is the small signal site that contained a lot of obsolete equipment now OBE by satellite communications. Article is misleading.
Article is misleading.”
Seems most of them are. Thanks for the clarification.
That was one of the best places I ever worked in my life. It is a very sad day for me.
It has taken a long time, but it looks like we are starting to have an exit strategy for WWII.
