Car dealers fear Obama fuel standards will make new vehicles unaffordable
fox news ^ | 7/30/2012 | fox news

The White House is expected to OK federal standards in the next few weeks that will nearly double vehicle gas mileage for vehicles by 2025, as automotive dealers warn the changes could slam the recovering retail car industry because they will come with sticker prices that will keep buyers off their lots.

The recommendations call for “fleet wide” gas mileage of 54.4 miles a gallon by 2015 -- essentially the average gas mileage for cars, trucks, vans and all other vehicles in a model year.

The Environmental Protection Agency and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration submitted their proposed 2017-2025 fuel-efficiency recommendations in mid-July to the administration’s Office of Management and Budget.

“Dealers support fuel economy increases,” Bailey Wood, a National Automobile Dealers Association spokesman told FoxNews.com Saturday. “But if dealers cannot put vehicles on the road, we cannot reduce greenhouse gases or our dependence of foreign oil.”

Cuba hasn't imported any cars from the US since 1959 -- it's amazing how long a car can last if it needs to.

The '40s and '50s vintage cars in Cuba were simple and rugged; many of them have had engines from other parts of the globe swapped in (which the Cuban government was smart enough to allow).

The current crop of vehicles isn't likely to be as easy to keep on the road for 50+ years, nor will *our* Communist regime allow us to even try.

Its all part of the plan. Obama and the Libs want us living in cities, using public transportation and riding bikes. It’s much easier to exercise dictatorial control and community “values” in cities.

It’s too late. They are already unaffordable for most people. That’s why used prices are climbing.

And in these other states can buy the engine upgrade kits for their golf carts...

I am not kidding, Hop-Up kits, re-engine kits and 4 wheel disc brake kits exist as well...

We’re being coerced into buying less efficient electric vehicles - or walking.

Good post.

How did we allow these democrats/marxist to do this to us?

Government shouldn't be able to tell us what kind of car to buy or tell companies what to produce. That is socialism/communism.

This is against freedom. This isn't what America was or is supposed to be .

This isn't America. This isn't freedom . America is supposed to be freedom not govrenment control . What's wrong with these government idiots and sheep(democrats) that accept this? WE have to reduce government . These government idiots shouldn't be allowed to do all of these millions of things they are doing. Government shouldn't be allowed to tell companies what kind of car or soda to produce. Government shouldn't only be allowed to do a HANDFUL of things. Numerically limit government . It's the only way to rein in these democrat monsters. I want freedom and CW 2 now.

For some reason I remembered hearing about the golf carts several years ago. I have noticed that more and more cities are adding bike paths and bike lanes. That is probably our transportation of the future, like most third-world countries.

———— Moving the national speed limit to 50 mph would also help———

That would induce a depression. Commerce will slow costs to rise precipitously

California restricts trucks to 66 and is dying.

At some point if you make a car to light it has a tendency to want to become airborne. Their is a limit to everything.

It gets wierder, they are exempt from safety regs if top speed is below either 35 or 40 mph if my memory is correct. Big niche market IMHO. Polaris Industries bought a big player in that arena to be at the table. Remember the $7500 electric car rebate snafu w/ a golf cart made in China, when that whole mess passed?

What a mess...

Don’t worry. The Obama Recession already makes new vehicles unaffordable for most people. The new fuel standards are irrelevant with the rest of the destruction.

That would be “California restricts trucks to 55 and is dying.”

The leftists looked at a red-blue map and concluded the best way to drain power form the red areas is to make suburban and rural living prohibitively expensive. The theory is once those Bible thumping conservatives are brought into the hive they will be assimilated. The auto, cheap gas and cheap electricity are bad things to the leftist fascist.

That new Fiat doesn’t get near 54 MPG

You're right. I went to the Fiat site and it only gets about 38 mpg! - highway!

I get 34 highway in my Camry, and it is a comfortable ,stable, safe car.

This little death trap is only a fad car.

Something that small should get at least 45 MPG.

There is no way they will get 54 MPG fleet mileage by 2015.
