Wouldn't quite call them gutless. While Russia is not exactly an Islamic M.E. country, it's not exactly a joke, either.
Dumb, maybe, but certainly not gutless. They had to know that by provoking both the dominant religious and secular authorities, they were poking quite a ferocious bear with a sharp stick. I had dismissed their stunt as pointless glory-hogging when I first read about it some weeks ago, but what they were protesting (in their own bizarre way) was the implicit endorsement of Putin and his (all the time more authoritarian) regime by the Orthodox Church, an entity which should be the moral & spiritual anchor for all Russians and either stay out of politics altogether or perhaps stand with the powerless people against their neo-soviet overlords. As a former resident of the wrong side of the iron curtain myself, I admire these women’s courage & conviction, if not necessarily their tactics.
