A celebration of free healthcare, the trade union struggle, the battle for women's rights and a fleeting lesbian kiss: the Olympics opening ceremony Friday did not shy away from weighty social issues.
Unsurprisingly, the show devised by Oscar-winning British director Danny Boyle drew accusations from the British political right that it had strayed into "leftie" issues.
Aidan Burley, a lawmaker from Prime Minister David Cameron's ruling Conservative party, tweeted: "The most leftie opening ceremony I have ever seen -- more than Beijing, the capital of a communist state! Welfare tribute next?"
He followed that with: "Thank God the athletes have arrived! Now we can move on from leftie multi-cultural crap."
Several people tweeted their support for his comments.
Alastair Campbell, former British Labour prime minister Tony Blair's communications chief, retorted on Twitter: "Brilliant that we got a socialist to do the opening ceremony."

Boyle said he was proud to involve NHS volunteers in the ceremony, which was broadcast to four billion people across the globe. We are almost unique, I think, in having universal healthcare, he said. Its something that is very dear to peoples hearts.
If you live here, you will end up there, it does not matter how rich or powerful you are. If you get in serious problems you actually end up in the National Health Service. - Danny's day
I was disgusted. Watched 10-12 minutes in 30-40 second doses.
Theme music from “The Exorcist”, followed by:
A celebration of Socialized Medicine, followed by:
Scary villains from children’s literature, chiefly Lord Voldemort, followed by:
The arrival of Mary Poppins singing “A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down”, followed by:
Theme music from the wonderful Christian film “Chariots of Fire” — which was rudely mocked and made fun of.
Where are we going? And why am I in this hand-basket??
The only thing worse was the Obama ad about middle class.
Some of the weirdest stuff I’ve seen.
Yeah just ask the average Brit how they feel about the NHS and all the ‘good’ care they get as they lay dying of neglect
I think the DNC paid Boyle to put it in there.
I’m just watching snippets on YouTube(No Cable). I had no idea that whole sequence was about socialized medicine. WTF?
Also other strange stuff: Brief shot of a movie with a boy in a dress, and some really cringe-worthy music from the 80s.
When did LSD come back into vogue?
LOL
Was Stalin there?
Boy in a dress?.
Why is everything politicized nowadays?
It seems that everything from chicken sandwiches and fast food places, to the Olympics, are part of some political statement.
And, why is it that, when these non-political issues get politicized, that they are politicized towards the liberal side of whatever issue is being pushed?????
Thanks for the heads up - I’ll be sure to NOT tune in!
I completely lost what interest I had in watching when I learned that these had been styled the “diversity” games as their theme. The icing on the cake is the Palestinians thanking them for not having a moment of silence in memory of the Israeli victims at Munich. It’s one big politically correct lefty puke fest.
Very brief movie clip being projected on that thing I think was a house in the middle of the stadium.
I knew that with the Nazi filled International Olympic Committee, the lefties in control of the UK and in the USOC my TV would be filled with lefty crap - and I thought likely the whole thing would be boring and infuriating. It was, as stories now showing up on the net attest.
‘knowing what I know about the UK’
Excuse me?.
I will watch it again later, and try to tell you the film.
The kid who opened with a solo.....for a billion plus people....did a good job, I thought.
The rest? Crap. I turned it off.
I fortunately missed that.
I’m glad I remembered to miss it.
Judging by the expression on her face, the Queen was not pleased.
No excuse...
The “weightiest” issue was just raised by BET.
They wanted to know what in the world that honky was doing carry the flag for Kenya.
True. Complete garbage.
You insult MY country, at least have the balls to say why.
I love the Queen. Seeing her was nice. (Danial Craig is very nice on the eyes!)
I was waiting to see if there would be a tribute to the rich and wonderful history of the British Empire. Or the many times through out history that the British Navy kicked the tar out of France.
Are they ashamed of it?
Because they're out of time.
Binary reads, in part, "conduit closing."
I’ve heard a rumor that all the female swimmers will have to wear “faux” scrotums so as not to offend the transgender athletes.
Various configurations are available and apparently the United States has the most aerodynamic models in use due to the extensive testing at the Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena, CA.
The faux vaginas were still in the testing stage for the men, so, they will be implemented in 2016.
Isengard..........
It was AWFUL!!!!!!!!!
They didnt seem to have much time for any history before the 19th century.
I didnt even see any Beefeaters, Yeoman of the Guard, or one Busby hat.
I was so dissapointed, what a bunch of left wing crap! I was embarrassed for the U.K.!
And what was up with the baby? Kinda grossed me...
“And, why is it that, when these non-political issues get politicized, that they are politicized towards the liberal side of whatever issue is being pushed?????”
My two cents: for normal people, politics is just a part of life, albeit an important one for us freepers.
For the left, politics is their religion. This was a church worship service for them.
And therein lies the irony: They want religious belief quashed while they attempt to inject their religion, socialism, into every facet of our lives.
Four years ago, the Beijing celebration demonstrated China’s ascendancy to the world.
Today Britain demonstrated the culmination of its decline. The NHS show was a weird and creepy celebration of Ingsoc. Even HM Queen Elizabeth II consented to a fictional role with a stunt double. Pathetic.
This ‘celebration’ was a reflection of someone who thinks western society is completely addicted to popular entertainment - nothing more. Compared to Beijing’s opening ceremony this was childish and vapid, bereft of any sort of true achievement or dignity.
Why did Palestine have athletes there? Maybe I have been out of the loop, but when did they officially become a country?
Not only awful.....but extremely boring!
Unless you need surgery on it, in which case you have to go to the end of the line.

It was a communist show- communist theme and a leftist telecast- leftist hosts.
Or long bowmen, billmen, knights, or anything cool like that. I know there are politically correct reasons for not having them, and there might be some good reasons for not including them. Sorry to the British FReepers if you think that would have been lame, but I love that stuff.

Athens was really good too. I think those will continue to hold the 1 and 2 spots as the best.
This one started out like it could have been the best, but flamed-out badly.
It was a missed opportunity. Much of the pop culture stuff should have waited for the closing
Haven't seen much of their logo floating around either:

yitbos
“Jerusalem”
The hill of Glastonbury where Joseph of Aramethea built a church - with all the flags of the world planted on it.
“Abide With Me”
And that majestic sequence with Isembard Kingdom Brunel, and the Industrial Revolution that changed the whole world, ending with the five rings of molten steel.
Even the brief homage to the NHS was hidden in a perfectly laudable piece about the Great Ormonds Street Hospital.
But where would FR be without its resident pack of “I refuse to watch this” know-nothing haters?
