President Obama's decision to talk gun control and discuss a ban on assault weapons are hot topics along the Gulf Coast.

Despite the tragic, shooting massacre in Colorado, gun shops continue to sell AR-15's and AK-47's to gun enthusiasts and sportsmen.

The AR-15 is NOT widely used in crime.

According the FBI, of the 199 homicides recorded in Alabama in 2010, handguns were used in 112, hands, fists or feet were used in 17, knives were used in 23....none were committed with a rifle.

Gun control has and will be debated for decades...an issue now on presidential campaign agenda.

My first issued rifle was an AR15 in 1989 (lower receiver, anyway--Army, Ft. Leonard Wood). Worked fine.

I've not had this problem, but I usually will ensure all my en bloc clips are loaded the same way (and for some silly reason, I like the right side to be on top).

One thing I have noticed is that the case of CMP ammo from HXP that came in en blocs had a jam problem for just about every clip I used (usually third or fourth round). I pulled them out and compared them to the clips I obtained stateside and noticed the HXP clip wings were closer together, and that they were putting more sideways pressure on the round, and that was jamming the bullet tip up against the opposite side of the chamber (left-side bullet would jam the tip against the right side of the chamber and vice-versa). I unloaded all those clips and tossed them (kept a few for reference). I reloaded all that ammo into my existing clips and haven't had a problem since.

The Lower Receiver for the AR15 is the part that BATF classifies as a “firearm”.
There are a whole world of available uppers and conversions for that “firearm”.

It is correct that AF General LeMay championed the AR-15. The arm was introduced into the AF in '64 and the Army in '65. I don't know off the top of my head when DoD designated the weapon M16. I have an Army Field Manual for drill and presentation dated 1966 and the rifle was by then referred to as an M16. My dad qualified on the M16 in 1970. Before that date his unit still carried the M1 carbine. ;-)

At any rate, the moniker "AR-15" is now an exclusive Colt trademark and refers ONLY to the Colt civilian product. Any copies of the Colt rifle should technically be referred to as "AR-15 type" weapons. Oddly, Aramalite is still around but no longer has the use of the AR-15 name. They still make the AR-10.

You are (sort of) correct. The AR-15 platform is basically Lego for guns. The only caveat is that there is a limit to the length of cartridge. A .308 AR-15 is possible, but would not function as a semi-auto. (Indeed, there are .50 BMG uppers for the AR-15, but they are bolt action.) If you need a semi-auto .308, you’d need to opt for an AR-10 platform rifle instead, which is the gun that the AR-15 was “shrunk down” from. Once you have the lower, the sky is the limit. Pop out two pins to switch to any compatible upper in any caliber under a cerain cartridge length.

You're correct, of course. But I've given up correcting people who say 'clip' when they mean 'magazine.'

The only ones I correct are my soldiers, who should know better. They just think 'clip' sound cool because they hear it in rap songs. And I use the term 'songs' loosely.

There are tons of "civilian" AKs. The Saiga is just one of many. Saigas are somewhat unique in being built from scratch as civilian weapons. Most AKs sold commercially in the US are former Combloc military weapons rebuilt around a new semiauto receiver. (Or, in the dark ages of the late 1980s around "demilled" receivers which are no longer legal, if they ever were.)

Confusingly, there is no standard designation for a semi-auto AK. You can find "AK-47" applied to both semi-auto and selective fire weapons.

As one person put it, the AR is like Barbie for men.

I know that whoever came up with that comment, it was meant to be dismissive of the AR as a "serious" rifle. Indeed, the AR is all too often "dressed up" far beyond the limits of good sense. However, though I personally prefer the likes of the M1A, HK-91 and FN-FAL, I am *delighted* that the AR has become such a wild success in the civilian market.

So I say God Bless companies like Magpul, LaRue Tactical, GG&G, Bushmaster, Spike's Tactical and the countless other companies and individuals who have helped kindle and sustain interest in the AR. We are a far better-armed people because of them.

It must be infuriating to the anti-gun crowd, truly maddening. Twenty-plus years of demonizing "black" rifles just fizzles into nothingness when it runs head-on into a tempting selection of Flat Dark Earth handguards and rail covers.

I bask in the warmth of Sarah Brady's misery. :-)
