Syrian Rebels Threaten To Attack Russian Naval Base

Syrian rebels have threatened to attack Russia's naval base at the port of Tartous if Moscow continues to supply weapons to President Bashar al-Assad's regime.

"We have a warning for the Russian forces: if they will send any more weapons that kill our families and the Syrian people we will hit them hard inside Syria," said Louay al-Mokdad, a logistical coordinator for the Free Syrian Army (FSA).

"Informers inside the regime are telling that us that there is a big weapons shipment arriving at Tartous in the next two weeks. We don't want to attack the port, we are not terrorists, but if they keep acting like this we will have no choice."

That is probably what the Russians are provoking.

Take a look at a map. Tartous Naval base is "just up the street" from Isral. Only 140 miles.

If the Russians want to prevent a successful attack on Iran's nuke facilities at Natanz it can sit right there and monitor every aircraft and radio transmission from that base.

If a suspicious flight takes off in Israel and starts a potential route that could lead to Iran the Russians can immediately detect it.

A north route will take them right by the Tartous base.

A central or southern route could be tracked as well, long enough to determine the likely destination (Iran). The shorter southern route will probably be off the table, given the current "nature" of our present administration.

A launch of Israel Jericho III land-based long range ballistic missiles would be immediately detected as well.

An attack on Tartous would play right into the Russians hands. They rekindled their effort to upgrade the base in 2009, about the same time the Iran nuclear threat became valid. Such an attack would provide them the "defense" excuse in that theater to do anything they like.

I also remember seeing some INTELSAT pics on a website of a supposed Russian Spetsnaz convoy, heavily-loaded and well-guarded, leaving Baghdad and headed toward the Bekaa Valley area. I didn’t save them and they were scrubbed. Dammit.

Gotta have training for the operators. Gotta have observers for the training. Gotta have some protection for the trainers and observers. Gotta have "inspectors" for the military hardware. Gotta have "support staff" for all of the above. They can not do all that on the base.

Given the butt-kisser-in-Chief in the White House will totally support the Russians "defending Russian citizens in the area" and his tenure as President is appearing to be ended, the Russians will push as much hardware in there as possible and finalize as many "contracts" as possible over the next six months.

Russian Warships Will Not Enter Syria Port – Navy Chief

MOSCOW, July 26 (RIA Novosti) – Russia’s navy chief said on Thursday that a flotilla of Russian warships off the coast of Syria would not dock at a port leased by Moscow in the violence-stricken Middle East country.

“The joint fleet flotilla will not enter the port of Tartus,” Vice Admiral Viktor Chirkov told journalists. “It is carrying out military drills in the Mediterranean.” The flotilla is comprised of 10 warships, plus escort vessels. Chirkov also said the flotilla was carrying marines.

Isn’t it too tricky to move a WMD program this way?

By the time Iraq War #2 was just a few months away, Saddam's massive WMD program was in shambles. We bombed facilities during Gulf War 1 and the UN spent years destroying tons of WMD products after War #1. All that was left officially prior to Gulf War 2, was the WMD that Saddam had reported possessing that the UN had not documented being destroyed. And of course whatever Saddam had never reported possessing. For example - He never reported his secret nuclear program in Libya that Gaddafi gave up. So what was left, could have been taken out in a few truck convoys. The rest was just scattered remains that US troops discovered. They reported those discoveries and UNSCOM came in to clean them up. What UNSCOM found, was never used to determine if all had been destroyed prior to Gulf War 2. Thus, the left believed a lie hatched from the UN. No WMD found.

Now UN/NATO finds itself in a horrific position. They have promoted an invasion of Syria, knowing full well the vast quantities of WMD that Assad has under his control. What was horrific is that Assad could launch WMD at Turkish and Jordanian cities at will. He just announced he will do that if invaded. The UN/NATO policy would have and still can kill thousands of citizens horrifically.

The UN/NATO's policy is to do nothing without Russian and Chinese permission. So that's what they're doing. Nothing.

In fact Russia is to blame for whatever Assad does because they supported him. Russia propped up his brutal genocidal regime and assisted him in massacring his own people. Russia warns Syria against using chemical weapons

The Russian Foreign Ministry said Syria in 1968 had ratified a 1925 international protocol that bars the use of poison gases as a method of warfare.

"The Russian side proceeds from the assumption that Syrian authorities will continue to strictly adhere to the undertaken international obligations," it said in a statement.
